Ordinary face masks and hand hygiene can cut down the transmission of infections during flu season, a new study shows.

Researchers from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, (UMSPH) led by Allison E. Aiello, recruited more than 1,400 college students living in university residence halls during the 2006-2007 influenza season.

Participants were assigned to one of three groups: those who wore face masks, those who wore masks and used alcohol-based hand sanitizer, or a controlled group who received no intervention.

Students were monitored for flu-like symptoms for six weeks. The participants viewed a basic hand hygiene instructional video.

Subjects in the hand hygiene and mask group were given an alcohol-based hand sanitizer and written instructions regarding proper use of face mask and sanitizer.

Those in the mask group received written instructions on face mask use only. The students began using the measures just after lab confirmation of influenza on the University of Michigan campus had been made.

In the hand sanitizer-mask group, Aiello and researchers found a reduction of influenza-like symptoms ranging from 35 to 51 percent when compared with the controlled group, said a UMSPH release.

The findings were published online in the February issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases.

HIV cuts down the blood supply to brain, prematurely ageing it in an infected patient – a condition seen in normal patients 15 to 20 years older.

“The greying of the AIDS patient community makes this infection’s effects on the brain a significant source of concern,” Beau Ances, an assistant professor of neurology at Washington University, said.

Prior studies of HIV infection’s long-term health effects have found the virus may adversely affect the heart, liver, endocrine system, skeleton and kidney.

A recent study of the overall health of the body found that HIV infection advances the body’s age by about 10 years.

HIV can lead to dementia in some patients, but quantifying the effects of HIV and ageing in the brain has been challenging.

“Patients are surviving into their senior years, and a number of them are coming forward to express concerns about problems they’re having with memory and other cognitive functions,” Ances said.

Epidemiologists estimate that 14 percent to 18 percent of all AIDS patients in the US are over 50 years old.

This age group also has one of the highest rates of new infection. If current trends continue, by the year 2015, their number will grow to more than 50 percent of the overall patient population, says a Washington University release.

“We believe the virus crosses into the brain using infected immune cells,” Ances said. “Once in the brain, HIV doesn’t directly infect neurons but instead affects supporting cells that can release immune factors that harm neurons.”

The report appeared online in The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): Scientists from University of Montreal are developing an appetite suppressing pill composed of leptin, the protein that tells the brain to stop eating.

Leptin regulates appetite in mammals and its levels decrease when fasting and rise during meals.

It has been proven to be an appetite suppressant when administered intravenously to pathologically obese people.

“Taken orally, such a pill would provide obese people with the sensation of being full. They would eat less and in turn lose weight,” said postdoctoral student Philippe Cammisotto.

“We hope to start animal testing in 2010. The molecule is easy to synthesize and the protocol is ready,” added Moise Bendayan, a pathology professor at the Universite de Montreal Faculty of Medicine.

The new pill is being created based on a startling Université de Montréal discovery from 2006: leptin isn”t only secreted by fatty tissues.

“From the first bite of any meal, leptin levels skyrocket in the bloodstream. Yet this has nothing to do with the leptin stored in the fatty tissues,” says Bendayan.

“In the lab, we proved that up to 80 percent of cells in our stomach also produce leptin. Those are the ones that regulate appetite,” Bendayan added. (ANI)

Washington, Jan 27 (ANI): A new study by American researchers has shown that changes in body fluid odours can be used to identify presence of lung cancer tumours.

The research by scientists at the Monell Center and collaborators may help in methods to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers for lung cancer in human urine.

Monell biologist Gary K. Beauchamp, a senior author on the study, said: “Cancer tumors result in a change in body-related odours that can be detected both by trained animal sensors and by sophisticated chemical techniques.

“These findings indicate that odour sensing has the potential to improve early diagnostic and prognostic approaches to lung cancer treatment.”

The scientists used a controlled animal model to reduce many confounding factors frequently found in human patient studies.

In behavioural studies, sensor mice were first trained to recognize the scent of urine of animals with lung cancer tumours. The trained sensor mice were then able to use urine odour to make a difference between tumour-bearing from healthy animals.

Chemical examination of urine compounds showed that the amounts of several chemical compounds differed significantly between tumour-bearing and healthy mice. Interestingly, the levels of many of these compounds were lessened in tumour-bearing mice rather than increased, which is often expected.

After experimenting more, the researchers were able to identify tumour-bearing from control mice simply by measuring the amounts of these biomarker chemicals in mouse urine and then creating chemical profiles. This chemical classification was accurate enough to identify 47 out of 50 mice as tumour-bearing or healthy.

The findings show that lung cancers produce changes in odorous compounds secreted in urine and that these changes can be detected and used as markers for the disease.

Steven M. Albelda, a senior author on the paper and William Maul Measey Professor of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, said: “Finding new ways to screen for early lung cancers in patients at risk, such as smokers, is one of the best ways we have to reduce the high death rate from this disease,”

Albelda added: “Using the same chemical approaches as in this paper, we hope to be able to detect odors in urine of smokers that could be used to identify lung cancer at a very early stage.”

According to the New York Post, she had dismissed rumours of an engagement to Katzenberg in 2008, but her boyfriend is now said to be preparing to make their union official.

London, Jan 27 (ANI): The world’’s second known “pregnant man” is set to give birth to a baby boy with his transgender husband next month.

Scott Moore and his partner, Thomas, were both born as girls. However, they underwent surgery and hormone treatments to change their sex.

While Scott, 30, is legally married to Thomas, he still has a female birth certificate.

“We know some people will criticise us, but we are blissfully happy and not ashamed,” the Telegraph quoted Scott as saying.

The couple from California already has two adopted boys, Gregg, 12, and Logan, 10,

Both are the children of a former female partner of Thomas’’s.

“We want to show the world that trans-families can be healthy, loving and nurturing,” said Thomas.

Scott originally born a girl called Jessica. He first realised he wanted to be a man when he hit puberty aged 11.

And started taking male hormones at the age of 16, with the consent of his parents. He also got his 36DDD chest removed.

Thomas, who was originally born Laura began his transition aged 19.

He also started taking testosterone in 1999 and had his 44GG breasts removed at the UCSF medical centre in San Francisco in 2004.

(CNS): Sleep is a basic human need, much like eating and drinking. It is crucial for our overall health and well being. Research shows that we spend up to a third of our lives sleeping. Good quality and restorative sleep is essential for day-to-day functioning. Studies suggest that sleep quality, as well as quantity, impacts our life. On an average, a normal adult needs 7-8 hours of good sleep. In teenagers this may go up to 9 hours, while the elderly can do with 5-6 hours of it. World Sleep Day is on 19th of March.

According to Dr Manvir Bhatia, Chairperson Sleep Medicine and Senior Consultant ,Department of Neurology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, “sleep is an essential commodity, which should not be dispensed with, as it cannot be compensated with anything else. It has a strong relationship with health. So we need to look after it well.”

Ghalib, the famous poet has said in one of his couplets “maut ka ek din muayyin hai, neend kyu raat bhar nahin aati”  (the day of death has been fixed by the Almighty, So why spend sleepless nights).

World Sleep Day 2010 is being held on 19th March, under the slogan “Sleep Well, Stay Healthy” . It is an international annual event, intended to be a celebration of sleep and a call to action on important issues related to sleep, including medicine, education, and social aspects. It is organized by the “World Association of Sleep Medicine”, with the aim to lessen the burden of sleep problems on society through better understanding, prevention and management of sleep conditions by raising awareness through dissemination of information.

Sleep problems constitute a global epidemic that threatens health and quality of life, for up to 45% of the world’s population. There is substantial evidence that sleep plays an important role in metabolic, cognitive, restorative, immune, and endocrine functions. Hence disruption in sleep affects all these.

Most sleep disorders are preventable or treatable, yet less than a third of sufferers seek professional help. Sleep medicine is a recent speciality which deals with various problems related to sleep, ranging from obstructive sleep apnoea – with predominant symptoms of snoring, to insomnia (30-45% adults suffer from it) or reduced and poor quality of sleep. Narcolepsy is another cause of excessive daytime sleepiness. Very often, persons suffering from these complaints are not aware of the health hazards associated with them.

Persons with sleep disorders may suffer from insufficient sleep at night and wake up listless, spending the day poorly, with little concentration and more aches and pains. Or they may have loud snoring and also wake up tired.  In both cases there are periods of irresistible tendency to take a nap or doze off during work. This affects day time concentration, and, hence, productivity. It also increases the chances of having other diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, heart attack etc. Apart from this, hundreds of people lose their lives unnecessarily every year due to sleep-related traffic accidents, including airlines and railways accidents.

Dr Bhatia laments the ‘junk sleep syndrome’ prevalent in the modern day teenagers. They are prone to using a whole lot of gadgets like I-Pod, internet, video games, television, or simply studying till late in the night, thus pushing their sleep time too late. Obviously they have difficulty in waking up in the morning and concentrating on their studies in school. They reach home tired, take a nap and the pattern repeats itself. It is not very uncommon to find such students having a ‘black out’ during examination time. These children are likely to develop a poor memory and low scholastic aptitude, and also an impaired immune function, thus inviting a host of diseases.

It must not be forgotten that poor sleep is a symptom of a cause like obstructive sleep apnoea, poor life style, anxiety, depression etc. Very often the sufferer resorts to the use of sleeping pills, which causes more harm than good. This self medication often becomes addictive in the long run, resulting in more problems.

More must be done to completely understand sleep and to understand better the cause of sleep disorders. We need to increase awareness about sleep related disorders particularly in students, and those working in BPO industry, railways, airlines and road transport services.

Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of these disorders can prevent serious health conditions and improve the quality of life.

Arshad Warsi has made his place in a particular niche in Bollywood and not he is planning to direct a film. The actor plans to devote this full year in learning the tactics of this trade so that he could be a responsible director by next year.

The rumors are heard that the actor is going to dedicate his foremost directorial venture to superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Zanjeer’. The cast of the film is not yet finalized but it is said that Abhishek Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra will be seen as a lead pair in the movie.

Arshad has confirmed the news saying, “I’m ready to direct the film called Akadd. It will be very realistic quirky action comedy. I won’t be beating up 25 people in the film. The style of acting, dialogue delivery, the actors’ body language would all be life-like. The heroine’s role is very, very important.”

The film is titled as ‘Akadd’ and would be on floors next year.

The film Milenge Milenge brought Kareena Kapoor and ex-lover Shahid Kapoor together but they won’t be seen together promoting their film. However Shahid did not have any problems with an idea but the producer Boney Kapoor believes that the publicity could be doubled if both the stars carry on the promotions separately.

This movie is very special as the former pair will be seen together after Imtiaz Ali`s “Jab We Met” in 2007.

When asked if he would like to promote the movie with Kareena, Shahid answered: “Yes, I’ll do everything I can to promote it. Of course, I`ll do everything in my power to see the film gets properly released. After all it’s my film.”

On the other side, Boney Kapoor had a different opinion. The producer said, “We’re getting Shahid and Kareena to do individual promotional activities. That way we give them space to be comfortable with the situation and also we get the double publicity for `Milenge Milenge` that we would if the pair promoted the film jointly”.

Shahid is so dedicated to this film that he had also talked with the producer to release the movie in June or July instead of releasing it in April so as to gain more audiences. Shahid said, “We met and took a joint decision. Boney-ji was co-operative. Otherwise I’d have had three releases -`Milenge Milenge`, `Paathshala` and `Badmaash Company` – in one month.”

The film has been directed by Satish Kaushik who shares the same building with Shahid.

Bebo and shahid promote their film jointly or individually, people are waiting anxiously for its release.

Mumbai, March 15 : Pharma major Ranbaxy Laboratories Friday said it will launch anti-diabetic drug Actos in the US by 2012.

Ranbaxy, majority owned by Japan’s Daiichi Sankyo, said it has settled litigation with the country’s Takeda Pharmaceutical over a generic equivalent version of the medicine and received a non-exclusive royalty free licence for its US patents covering Actos.

“The agreement will allow Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals to bring to patients with diabetes a generic alternative in this therapeutic area,” vice president for sales and distribution Jim Meehan said in a regulatory filing.

Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ranbaxy, is based in Florida and engaged in the sale and distribution of generic and branded prescription products in the US. According to IMS Health, Actos had a $3.4 billion market in 2009.

Canadian researchers have decoded opium poppy which will lead to cheaper and mass production of the current costly pain killers. Currently, the morphine is the most used painkiller around the world.

Researchers at Canada’s University of Calgary revealed Sunday that they have decoded the unique genes in the opium poppy that allow it to make codeine and then morphine painkiller.

The enzymes in these unique genes can be harnessed to readily and easily mass produce pain killers, said researchers led by biological sciences professor Peter Facchini.

“The enzymes encoded by these two genes have eluded plant biochemists for a half-century,” Facchini told the Canadian Press Sunday.

“In finding not only the enzymes but also the genes, we’ve made a major step forward. It’s equivalent to finding a gene involved in cancer or other genetic disorders,” said the Canadian professor who has been doing research on poppy opium for about 20 years.

Facchini and fellow researcher Jillian Hagel uses state-of-the-art scanners to unlock the genetic secrets of poppy opium.

Hagel, who herself scanned nearly 23,000 different genes on a tiny slide, finally decoded the gene called codeine /O/-dementhylase which produces the plant enzyme that converts codeine into morphine.

Calling it their ‘eureka moments,’ the Canadian researcher said, “Science is like that. It’s a lot of tedious work, then you have these seconds of sheer excitement because you know you’ve found something.”

Facchini, who has filed a patent for his work, said their discovery will soon help produce morphine cheaper to benefit users.

Their work was published Sunday in Nature Chemical Biology.

However, there were many other singers who came out with some brilliant performance of the Rolling Stones songs. How is life now that you have become a maasi for the second time?

Absolutely amazing. The baby boy (Kiaan) is really cute. Samaria looks so much like Sunjay (Kapur) but the newborn looks just like Karisma. It’s celebration time as the family has a boy after a long time.

I think it’s also because it is a Raju Hirani film. It’s the first time and Aamir and I starred together so there were a lot of expectations. I feel that I make the best pair with Aamir.

You only did the film because of Aamir and Raju.

In each of my films, good or bad, I have always stood out irrespective of the presence of other actors. I am doing Ra.One and I have fantastic roles in Agent Vinod and Golmaal 3. I have strived really hard to be known first as an actor then a star. I would hate it if someone tells me that I looked very good in my films and I hope that I am cast for my talent and not for my beauty.

I am here to sell my talent and I take great pride when I am offered a role in a boys’ film like 3 Idiots. I think my audience no longer likes me in films like Kambakkth Ishq and honestly I have realised that I won’t make that mistake again.

Kurbaan got good reviews but it didn’t work.

An actor is an actor because of failures, not success. A superstar is one who overcomes failures and people remember how good you are in a film, which has not worked. I am what I am because of my flops. Anybody can give two super hits and become number one.

Is there a long thought process before signing a film now?

Sometimes there is no thought process at all. We actors are like scientists who keep on experimenting. People should know that Kareena takes risks and I did Chameli when I was 23 years old. I don’t care about what people say about Tashan as I gave everything to the film by changing my body. How many actresses have the courage to take up the challenge of transforming themselves especially in this male dominated industry? Tashan was an achievement as I also met Saif during the film. Sometimes flop films and not hits is great news for actors.

How do you mange to have a good equation with all the Khans?

I have chosen the safest Khan for my personal life. I don’t know if there are any sides as all of them are really different. Saif and I are great friends with Aamir and Shah Rukh is like family. My sister loves Salman.

It’s said that you are the highest paid actress in the industry today. Is it true?

I don’t know. You tell me as every day there are reports that so and so is charging so much. If there is a list on highest paid actresses, I want to be number ten.

But the rivalry is evident when it comes to endorsements.

A brand will sign me if they think I am good. There are only three shampoos and three soaps in the market so where does the question of who is the most wanted actress arise? Everybody has brands to endorse.

How do you manage to take frequent breaks given your busy schedule?

I take lot of off time as it’s very important for an actor to work do great work and take breaks. I must spend time with family and my loved ones or else I will just wear off, I will die, and my looks will fade. I do four movies and 12 brands a year so I need to travel all over the world and explore, which also shows in my acting. I have instructed Zahid (secretary) that after every three months I need to have a break for at least a week to look rejuvenated.

Although I appreciate people who want to work all year, I can’t do it.

There is so much speculation about your and Saif’s relationship and wedding. Does it affect you?

We have been open about our relationship and that’s why we are the hottest couple. If we get married now there will be no curiosity. We are enjoying all the attention and are used to news about us getting married and breaking up all the time. Whenever we get married, we will let the world will know.

Are wedding bells five years down the line?

It will be much lesser than that. (Laughs)

News is that you are buying an IPL team with Saif?

We did go for the bidding and we had all the papers in place but it got cancelled. If we are rebidding, it will be Saif’s call. I don’t understand cricket but Saif follows it. Movies are my only passion.

There are reports that you and Saif are planning a joint production house?

I want directors and producers to make films for me. I don’t want to make films for myself. Professionally we are dramatically different as I sign a film saying ‘let’s do it’ while Saif won’t do a film till he is 100 per cent sure.

Are you doing Madhur Bhandarkar’s next film?

I would love to work with Madhur. We are working on a script but nothing has been finalised yet.

What about Milenge Milenge and the constant issues about Shahid Kapoor?

These talks have resurfaced as Milenge Milenge will soon release. I have told Boney Kapoor (producer) that I am ready to promote the film. As for reports about Shahid and me, I am used to it.

Losing over 50 pounds can be a real mental as well as physical challenge. Knowing what you need to do and actually doing it are two very different things. In order to lose all that weight, you must be mentally prepared. Go into it knowing that you will be challenged, but that you are fully capable of meeting the challenge and winning. I have done it and you can do it, too.

There are three very important aspects to losing weight, no matter how much you have to lose, but when you have more to lose than the “average” dieter, you have special circumstances and those call for long-term changes in your lifestyle.

First of all, you must treat your fitness program like the recovering alcoholic does their rehabilitation. You have to get up every morning and start anew. Don’t tell yourself that you will have to diet for a certain number of months or exercise a certain number of days. Get up in the morning and diet today. You must work out today. Saving it for tomorrow will only keep you fat because tomorrow, as we all know, never comes!

Next, remember to never reduce your calorie intake to the point of starvation or even semi-starvation. When you are 50 pounds or more overweight, you must take special care to eat enough calories when dieting. It may sound counterproductive, but it really does make sense. When you eat too few calories, your body will rebel. It does this because it has grown accustomed to the weight you are at and is used to a large number of calories. A sudden drop in calorie intake sets off the starvation response. Your body assumes you are starving and your metabolism slows down to protect your life. You may be tempted to lose weight fast, but it won’t continue to come off fast. At 50 pounds over your ideal weight, you can lose on a healthy 1500 calories a day. Studies have shown that those who lose weight slowly are much more likely to keep the weight from coming back than those who do not.

Finally, keep a diet and exercise diary. Include the foods you eat, calories consumed, exercise types and times, and your specific weight loss and fitness goals in your journal. The ability to look back at what you’ve accomplished adds a dimension of satisfaction. Over time, you will also be able to see which areas need some improvement.

I have found it useful to keep my goals and health in mind at all times. Let yourself basque in your success and feel good about the changes you make. While it is wonderful to realize that you feel and look better than you did before starting out, it is equally as good to feel great about accomplishing your goals.

Plastic surgery is clearly indicated for individuals with birth defects or to reconstruct tissues that have been removed for treatment of an underlying disease, like breast reconstruction following a mastectomy for breast cancer. And, let’s be clear, I am not against plastic surgery for cosmetic enhancement. A person who doesn’t like the look of his or her nose should consider a rhinoplasty. A woman whose breasts significantly deflate after childbirth may reasonably consider breast augmentation, just as a woman who is stooped over and has back pain from large breasts may appropriately seek a reduction mammoplasty.

However, harboring a severe dissatisfaction with one’s body image that results in an insatiable appetite for multiple cosmetic surgeries to achieve perfection is labeled the Body Dysmorphic Disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Dr. Eileen Bradbury, a consultant psychologist at The Alexandra Hospital in England, treats cosmetic procedure addicts.
