ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly is set to hold debate on Kerry-Lugar bill, the US aid tripling annual civilian aid for Pakistan, during its proceedings, which will commence 4pm today.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Lower House unanimously decided to debate the Kerry-Lugar bill, which triples the annual US civilian economic assistance to Pakistan for the next five years, during today’s (Wednesday) session.
The motion was moved by Raja Asad Khan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr. Babar Awan said the government did not want to hide anything and wanted open debate on all issues in parliament.
NA Speaker Dr. Fehmida Mirza decided to initiate the debate under Rule 259 of the Rules of Procedures and Conduct of the National Assembly, 2007 after considering the government’s stance on the issue and gauging support for the debate in the House.
The PML-N was of the view that the Kerry-Lugar bill would put the sovereignty and self respect of the country at stake, and is aimed at safeguarding the interests of the foreign powers.
Pakistan Muslim League MNA, Shakir Bashir Awan read out the motion which was accepted after the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Babar Awan did not oppose it.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lower House Chaudhry Nisar Ali will initiate debate on the bill after the question hour.
