latest News Updated, Orange Park, FL : Authorities say the body discovered in a south Georgia landfill has been identified as that of a missing 7-year-old Florida girl, Somer Thompson.
Orange Park Fl, Florida Girl, Somer Thompson Clay County, Florida, Sheriff Rick Beseler confirmed the grisly discovery Thursday morning.

Beseler said authorities made the identification through distinguished markings on the body found in trash Wednesday at the Chesser Island Landfill in Folkston, Georgia. The landfill is some 55 miles north of where the girl became missing.

Published reports have the young girl being separated from her classmates as she made her way home from Grove Park Elementary School in Orange Park, Florida, on Monday afternoon.

Officials say the Medical Examiner’s office in Savannah is scheduled to conduct an autopsy on the body on Thursday.

During a news conference Wednesday night Beseler had warned whoever committed the heinous act that authorities will apprehend that suspect.

During their investigation police interviewed close to 75 registered sex offenders who resided within a 5-mile radius of where the young girl lived. However state officials say the number of sex offenders in the area is much higher, and reveal 161 reside in close proximity to to the Thompson home.
