Blast In American Power Plant

MIDDLETOWN: A huge explosion has rocked a power plant in the US state of Connecticut. At least 5 people are believed to be killed due to the explosion while several have been wounded.

People up to 10 km away reported hearing or feeling the blast. Black smoke could be seen pouring out of the plant site shortly afterwards.
The 620-megawatt plant was on the Connecticut River. Rescue work has begun at the site of the explosion.

The contest was held at Tampa in Florida on Nov. 21. The contest is held every year, and only women of Indian origin can take part in it.

This is one of the biggest beauty contests in the United States and it decides who would be the representative of United States in the Miss India World beauty pageant. The Miss Indian American beauty pageant was organized as part of the fifth convention of the Asian American Convenience Stores Association.

Priyanka Singha was crowned the 28th Miss Indian American, beating contestants from 25 other states. Bollywood actress Neha Dhupia, who was also crowned the Miss India Universe in 2002. Neha Dhupia conferred the crown and the sash to Priyanka Singha. Priyanka Singha will be representing the United States in the Miss India World beauty pageant that will be held at Durban, in South Africa, in 2010. The tentative date for the beauty pageant has been set on March 27.

The first runner up of the beauty pageant is Shivali Vyas. She is a resident of Tampa in Southern Florida and a student at the University of South Florida. The title of the second runner up was conferred to Disha Patel, a resident of Illinois. Wining a beauty pageant seems to come easy to Priyanka Singha. Only last month, the California born girl had been declared this year’s Miss India Northern California. Therefore, Priyanka Singha being crowned the 28th Miss Indian American doesn’t come as a surprise.

During the three-hour live show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Shakira, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Green Day and Adam Lambert all took the stage. True to her reputation, Lady Gaga delivered an eye-popping performance on her new single Bad Romance. She matched a flesh-colored bodysuit with flashing white accessories that mimicked a rib cage. She then picked up her mic stand and smashed open a glass enclosure housing a piano. She climbed up, sat down and played Speechless while flames enveloped the wooden instrument. Whitney Houston was honored with the International Artist of the Year award, joining only six other winners such as Michael Jackson in the history of the AMAs. She also performed on I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.

American Idol star Adam Lambert closed the show with a provocative version of his single, For Your Entertainment. The awards were presented by Kristen Bell, Alex Rodriguez, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Kris Allen, Ne-Yo, Perez Hilton, Drake, Kid Cudi, Samuel L Jackson, Leona Lewis, Seth Greene and Ryan Seacrest. The Awards honor the year’s top-selling artists in eight popular genres. Singer Jennifer Lopez performed onstage.

After a mostly tame awards ceremony featuring wholesome pop country singer Taylor Swift sweeping most of the major awards, Lambert’s closing performance left a bad taste in the mouths of many viewers, especially parents who let their tween Taylor Swift fans stay up to watch the show.

After the tongues instantly started wagging about his shocking performance, Lambert, who has a fairly cocky attitude for someone who lost on American Idol, pulled the discrimination card, saying there’s a “double standard” and telling Rolling Stone that it would be “discrimination” if his performance was edited for later broadcasts. Lambert was most likely referring to Madonna and Britney Spear’s controversial kiss during their racy performance at the 2003 MTV Music Video Awards.

Lambert’s song, For Your Entertainment, was in itself rather boring. It featured a few of Lambert’s infamous shrieks, but the song itself wasn’t all that memorable. If Lambert hadn’t turned up the heat on his performance, certainly no one would be talking about it today.
