MELBOURNE: Pakistan ended their disappointing tour losing all matches in the series of three Tests, five One-day Internationals and a Twenty20 match as Australia also won their last match by two wickets on the last ball of the match here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

Chasing an easy target of 128 runs, Pakistan started disastrously by losing both their openers, Imran Nazir (naught) and Imran Farhat (8), for just 10 runs on the board.
However, wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal came to rescue to take his team out of trouble. He held the one end intact as other batsmen were being dismissed at regular intervals.
Pakistan were well on the way to success as long as Kamran was at the crease but his ouster changed the whole scenario and the tourists who were needing only 30 runs from 35 balls to win the match managed only 27 runs with one wicket remaining to give Australia their first T20 win against Paksitan.
Kamran blasted 64 off only 33 balls with seven fours and two sixes while the second top scorer was his younger brother Umar with 21. The only other batsman reaching double-figure was Umar Gul (10).
Shaun Tait was the most successful bowler with three wickets for 13 runs, supported by Shane Watson and Steve Smith claiming two wickets each.
Earlier, Michael Clarke who was leading the Aussies in the absence of Ricky Ponting, won the toss and elected to bat but his team could not make any big score and were all out for 127 in 18.4 overs.
Except Michael Hussey (40 not out), Clarke (32) and David Warner (24), no batsman could enter into double figures as three batmen were run out by alert Pakistani fielders.
For Pakistan, Umar Gul captured three wickets for 20 runs while Malik claimed two for 31. Pacers Mohammad Asif and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan took one wicket each.
Shoaib Malik led Pakistan as their T20 captain Shahid Afridi was banned for playing two T20 matches for ball tampering.
Imran Nazir returned to Pakistan lineup and Imran Farhat made his T20 debut.
Australia also included two debutants – legs-pinning allrounder Steve Smith and left-handed batsman Travis Birt.

SYDNEY : Thirteen people were wounded after a man detonated a makeshift bomb made of fuel and fireworks in a shopping mall in the northern Australian city of Darwin, officials said on Wednesday.

“There was an explosion… caused by a mixture of fuel and fireworks,” an ambulance spokeswoman told AFP.
“Thirteen casualties were transported to Darwin Hospital with injuries ranging from minor cuts to burns and smoke inhalation,” she said, adding that none of the injuries was believed to be serious.
A man who surrendered himself to officials shortly after the 11:00 am blast had been taken into custody, police said.
Media reports said the injured included a police officer who suffered smoke inhalation. Sky News cited witnesses as saying a man pushed a shopping trolley loaded with cans of fuel and fireworks into an insurance company office.
“I was shopping at Woolworths and then just started hearing all this crashing and banging, sort of like a roof was collapsing and sort of like a little explosion,” witness Louisa Ainsworth told public radio.
“We just went outside and saw all the smoke and people screaming and running out of TIO (the Territory Insurance Office).”
Another witness, Charmaine Burton, told the AAP newswire “There was an accelerant-type smell, like “kero,” or a diesel fuel sort of smell” coming from the site.
The building, on Darwin’s main street, houses an insurance company office and a major Woolworths supermarket.

India Cautions Its Nationals Against Attacks in Australia

India Cautions Its Nationals Against Attacks in Australia, India’s junior foreign minister Shashi Tharoor said that New Delhi has issued a note of caution to Indian students studying in Australia following a series of attacks.

Accounting graduate Nitin Garg, 21, originally from the state of Punjab in northern India, was stabbed to death on Saturday night on his way to a job at a fast food outlet in Melbourne. The killing follows a series of attacks on Indian students in Melbourne and Sydney in 2009.
India’s Foreign Ministry issued an advisory to Indian students studying in Australia, cautioning them about “several incidents of robbery and assault” and urging them to be careful.
“There are, sadly, incidences of violence and crime everywhere, including in our country. What we don’t want is for a continuing pattern of attacks against our citizens.
So we have taken steps of advising our citizens what to do and what not to do,” Tharoor said. “Let’s leave it to the Australian government to deal with the problem as a law and order problem in their own country,” he added.
Australia Vs Pakistan 2nd Test Today

Australia Vs Pakistan 2nd Test 3 Jan Live, Australia skipper Ricky Ponting admits Danish Kaneria poses an even greater threat than he originally thought after taking a close look at the Pakistan leg-spinner ahead of the second Test at the SCG.
Watch Live Cricket

Kaneria, who is set to return to the tourists’ line-up following a finger injury, has taken 245 wickets in 56 Tests to sit fourth on the list of Pakistan’s all-time wicket-takers.
During Pakistan’s last Test series in Australia in 2005, the wrist spinner took 15 wickets in three Tests, eight of them at the SCG.
“I was a little bit surprised when I saw his record,” Ponting said.
“He’s a very good bowler but I saw his record come up against some of the great spinners over the last 10 years and it stacks up there against the best of them.
“His record’s actually better than Abdul Qadir and everyone knows how highly regarded he was.
“He’s taken 240-odd wickets in 50-odd Tests, so he’s got a very good record.
“We’ve played him here before and he’s bowled well. Leg-spinners have that knack of being able to take wickets and that’s one area from last week that they will look to strengthen for this game.”
Australia are expected to name an unchanged XI for the match, although Simon Katich’s injured elbow was causing him some discomfort following a net session on Saturday.
NSW team-mate Phillip Hughes has flown to Sydney as standby for Katich.
Regardless of any last-minute disruptions, Ponting has set his team the task of matching the levels reached in the opening Test, when they posted a 170-run victory.
“It was our best and most disciplined effort and the challenge for all of us now is to make sure we keep those standards up for the remainder of the summer,” he said.
“I have spoken about each game being a step forward in the right direction and last week we set ourselves some very high standards that we’ve got to keep maintaining.
“Teams are probably at their most dangerous when they’ve come off a heavy loss like last week. The challenge for us is not to get carried away with what we’ve done.
“I keep reinforcing to the guys how important it is we don’t sit back and expect things to happen for us in this game.
“We’ve got to get out there and make the running like we did last week.”
Pakistan will be looking to start 2010 on a positive note after a rather grim 2009 when they became the outcasts of the cricket world due to unfortunate circumstances in their country.
The tourists’ fielding and batting will have to improve drastically if they have any hope of emulating the result achieved at this ground over 15 years ago: a victory over Australia.
Key Players:
Australia: Nathan Hauritz proved during the first Test at the MCG that he is fast becoming a key in the Australian line-up. Not only did he go above and beyond the duty of nightwatchman – scoring 75 – but he also bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, and on a ground which aids spinners he could again produce a match-winning spell.
Pakistan: Danish Kaneria’s record speaks for itself. A hardworking bowler, Kaneria may partner Sadeed Ajmal in a leg and off break combination that could cause some difficulties for the Australians on a ground which is notorious for aiding the slower bowlers.
Prediction:It’s hard to see an under-practiced Pakistan pipping one of the world’s strongest teams in their own backyard. Australia will have to do more than just show up, mind, but victory for the hosts is almost a certainty.Watch Live Cricket
Indian Students to Shun Australia Due to Attacks
December 31, 2009 by lee

SYDNEY News: Australia’s international student sector, the third largest export earner, is forecast to see a 20 percent drop in Indian students in 2010, costing $69.7 million, after a series of attacks on Indians students in 2009.

A study by The Tourism Forecasting Committee released on Wednesday found that while international tourism numbers were expected to grow by 4.3 percent in 2010, there would be a significant decline in international student arrivals.
It forecast 4,000 fewer Indian students, a fall of 21 percent compared with a 35 percent rise in 2009.
“The resultant loss in economic value to Australia could be as high as A$78 million in 2010 if these enrolments are not filled by other international students,” a statement by the Tourism Forecasting Committee said.
The study attributed the fall in Indian student numbers to a spate of attacks on Indian students that cast a shadow over the Australian education industry in mid-2009.
The attacks in Melbourne and Sydney, which police blamed on opportunistic criminals, escalated into a diplomatic issue between Australia and India after some Indian students and Indian media labelled the attacks as racist.
Australia’s international student sector is the country’s third largest export earner, behind coal and iron ore, totalling A$13 billion ($10 billion) in 2007-08.
In 2009, there were more than 70,000 Indians studying in Australia. Australia is a major destination for Indian students studying abroad, who recognise the cost competitiveness of Australian education services.
Enrolments of Indian students in Australia had increased at an average annual rate of around 41 per cent since 2002.
“What we’re saying is that based on consideration of visa applications there’s a 20 percent hit,” chairman of The Tourism Forecasting Committee, Bernard Salt, told local radio.
“This is a segment that has grown strongly throughout this decade but the downturn is expected in response to concerns that the Indian community have had about safety,” said Salt.
“I suppose the query is whether in fact this is a structural issue that will be with us for some time, that is one fifth of the market has been evaporated, or whether in fact this is a knee-jerk, just a one-year reaction,” he said.
The president of the Federation of Indian Students of Australia, Gautam Gupta, said the forecast drop in Indian students is not as bad as first predicted after the attacks.
“We were predicting a drop of about 50 percent, so if the drop is about 20 percent, that’s significantly lower than what was the prediction about three months back,” he told radio.
Gupta said Indian student numbers could rebound as early as 2011, if attacks continued to decline. The study said the negative impact from the attacks should not continue beyond 2010.

PCB Recalled Paceman Sami to Tour Australia

KARACHI, Pakistan News Updates: Pakistan paceman Mohammad Sami was Tuesday recalled for the tour of Australia following team management’s request for an additional fast bowler, giving him a chance to revive a dwindling career.

“The selection committee has agreed to send Sami as reinforcement player to join the Pakistan team in Australia,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) statement said.
The addition of Sami was requested to help ease the burden on the team’s fast-bowlers in what is expected to be a demanding tour in Australia, the statement added.
He will supplement an attack featuring Umar Gul, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Aamer and Abdur Rauf.
The 28-year-old right-arm fast bowler played the last of his 33 Tests against India at Bangalore in December 2007 before he was sidelined for poor form.
He then joined the unofficial Indian Cricket League (ICL) and was banned from international cricket in early 2008.
Earlier this year all 23 Pakistan players who joined the ICL suspended their contracts in India and were forgiven by the PCB.
Sami has so far taken 81 wickets in 33 Tests, and a further 118 in 83 one-day internationals.
He has shown recent good form in country’s domestic cricket with 30 wickets.
“I am very happy and am confident of making the most of this chance to resurrect my career,” said Sami, widely regarded as one of the most talented bowlers to not turn his potential into performances.
Pakistan plays the first of three Tests against Australia at Melbourne from December 26. They will also play five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 on the tour.
Twins Separated from Bangladesh Intensive Care: Hospital

SYDNEY news update: Bangladeshi twins Trishna and Krishna have left intensive care as they continue their remarkable recovery from surgery to separate their conjoined heads, the hospital said.
The two-year-old girls, rescued from a Dhaka orphanage, moved to a shared room on the normal ward on Monday, just a week after the 32-hour operation to disconnect their fused skulls, brains and blood vessels.
“They are sharing a room together and settling into their new environment,” Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital said in a statement.
“The girls are getting to know the new staff who will be caring for them now that they have left intensive care.”
The twins’ heads remain heavily bandaged but they have appeared otherwise well, with Trishna awake and talking two days after surgery and Krishna blowing a signature raspberry when she was woken from a medical coma on Saturday.
Their condition has amazed medical staff who nursed them back to fitness after they arrived in fading health from Bangladesh two years ago, and gave them just a 25 percent chance of both recovering completely from the separation.
“We’re all so proud of our children’s hospital and we’re so proud of the quality of the nurses and the staff and the doctors that we’ve got there,” Victoria state Premier John Brumby told Fairfax radio.
“This was just another great example where these two children, who I think, to be honest, many of us thought were not going to get through, have come through, fingers crossed at this stage, with flying colours.”
The girls’ 22-year-old mother, who was unable to care for the sickly babies and handed them to an orphanage soon after their birth, has said she hopes to travel to Australia to see them.
