Hudson to Play Nelson Mandela’s Ex-Wife

LOS ANGELES: Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson is to play the role of Winnie Mandela, the controversy-plagued ex-wife of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela in a new movie called Winnie, Variety reported on Wednesday.

The film is based on the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life, according to Variety.

Production is scheduled to begin May 30 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment.

The movie is the second about the Mandelas this year, with Morgan Freeman set to star as the iconic president in the Clint Eastwood film Invictus, which is due in cinemas in December.

Hudson, who is expected to sing the film’s theme song, won the Oscar for her screen debut in Dreamgirls and followed with The Secret Life of Bees and Sex in the City.

“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson said. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honoured to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”

Winnie Mandela was a fierce opponent to apartheid alongside her husband before the end of the racist regime. But she was tarnished by an association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year-old alleged informer in 1989. The Mandelas divorced in 1996 and she was convicted of fraud in 2003 for stealing from a funeral fund.

Winnie will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, the veteran South African filmmaker whose 2006 film Yesterday was Africa’s Best Foreign Film nominee, and who also directed Cry, The Beloved Country and Sarafina!

Tom Cruise in Austria To Make The Film

VIENNA: Tom Cruise has arrived in the Austrian city of Salzburg to shoot scenes for the new action comedy “Knight & Day.”

Cruise, wearing sunglasses and a casual shirt, waved as he got off a private jet at the local airport Thursday afternoon.

Austrian broadcaster ORF reports that Cameron Diaz, Cruise’s co-star, has been in Salzburg since Tuesday.

“Knight & Day” is directed by James Mangold and is due to be released next summer.

The Salzburg film shoot is expected to last less than a week. Earlier this month, hundreds of locals tried to snag spots as extras.

12 Killed As Explosives-Laden Vehicle Rams Police Post In Peshawar

PESHAWAR: At least 12 people including police personnel and two children and women were killed and 30 others were injured in a car blast near Peshtakhara Police Station security check post on Bara Road on Saturday. According to police officials and eye-witnesses, when a motorcar was stopped by police personnel at the check post on suspicion of being explosive laden, it exploded with a big bang killing 12 persons and leaving 30 others injured.

The injured persons and the bodies of the dead were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) where state of emergency was declared. Peshawar DCO Mohammad Anis confirmed killing of 5 persons in the incident, but later Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaquat Ali Khan said the death toll was 10. By stopping the car by the police, he said, Peshawar city was saved from destruction.

He said that security equipment’s have been purchased for bringing improvement in the security system. Officials of the bomb disposal squad confirmed use of 50 to 60 kg explosive material in the blast. Peshtakhara is a suburb of Peshawar bordering the tribal area of Khyber Agency. The police after the incident cordoned off the area and collected forensic samples from the site.

NWFP Governor Owais Ahmad Ghani and Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti condemned the suicide car-bombing incident at the police check post on Bara Road and termed it a cowardly act of terrorism. Provincial Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour visited Lady Reading Hospital and inquired about treatment of the injured persons.

Talking to media, he ruled out negotiations with terrorists, and said that they have the stains of the blood of innocent people on their hands. NWFP Minister for Information Iftikhar Hussein condemned the explosion and said that the operation against terrorists would continue till complete elimination of the menace of terrorism.

Train Derails in Western India, Nine Dead

MUMBAI: At least nine people were killed and 25 injured when a New Delhi-bound train derailed near the western Indian city of Jaipur early on Saturday, officials said.

Fifteen coaches of the Mandor Express jumped the track about 40 km from Jaipur, and rescue teams were working to free trapped passengers, state chief minister Ashok Gehlot toldreporters.

“Rescue operation is still on,” he said, adding the cause of the accident was being investigated.

Mayor Bloomberg presented the keys of the town to the victors at the City Hall ceremony right after the triumphal march. There are only a limited amount of space in the celebration of the City Hall so that only some seats are available, however anyone can line the parade route.

This will be the 178th parade triumphantly on Broadway and the first since February 2008 when the Giants won the Super Bowl. 36 tons of paper used for the Giants parade and a similar amount is expected this time. The city says the parade will cost about the same as last year for the Giants. The festivities came to $ 331,000.
