ISTANBUL : President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday called upon the international community to intensify efforts to eliminate terrorism and if required to undertake review of the whole anti-terror fight in a bid to learn proper lessons in this behalf.

President Zardari was addressing the Regional Summit of Afghanistan and its six immediate neighbours, also attended by observers from a host of countries including British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, Russian and American officials and Ministers of State of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The Conference, also called “Istanbul Summit on friendship and co-operation in the heart of Asia,” concluded by issuing a joint statement which called for lending support to the Afghan national process of reconciliation and reintegration in accordance with Constitution of Afghanistan in a way that is “Afghan-led and driven.”

Speaking at the summit, President Zardari said that the international community must take stock of what is lacking in the fight against terror. “International community must do more and help the countries of the region to overcome this menace,” said the President, observing that process of dialogue could also be effectively utilised for this purpose.

“Pakistan’s democratic government has evolved a policy of Dialogue, Development and Deterrence” to face the prevailing situation of terrorism, he said. This policy, he said, could be more and more successful with the aid of the international community which should also open up the avenues of market access and increased trade for the development of the region.

“We have cleared Swat from terrorists and are fighting them in South Waziristan but other Nations should also help us through various means,” he said. He said there were 2000 religious “Madrassahs” in Pakistan “but not all preached hatred. “The international community must understand that Afghan problem could not be resolved overnight as long-term efforts were required to achieve progress on this issue.”

In his speech, Afghan President Hamid Karzai quoted verses of Poet of the East Allama Muhammad Iqbal to the effect that Afghanistan was the heart of Asia. “We need to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people to find a solution to the Afghan problem,” Karzai said. “Peace and stability in Afghanistan could be achieved through the support of the international community,” he said.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that ultimately it depended upon the countries of the region to get together and find a solution to the Afghan problem. The Istanbul Summit was held among Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, China, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrghistan but observers were also present from USA, UK, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Japan, France, Germany, United Nations, European Union, Nato and Turkey itself. The observers said the Istanbul summit would be useful for them in preparing for the forthcoming Conference on Afghanistan in London.

President Zardari Timeline Resists U.S. to Fight Insurgents

WASHINGTON News updates: President Asif Ali Zardari has resisted a direct appeal from President Obama for a rapid expansion of Pakistani military operations in tribal areas and has called on the United States to speed up military assistance to Pakistani forces and to intervene more forcefully with India, its traditional adversary, Washington Post reported on Wednesday morning.
President Zardari Timeline Resists U.S. to Fight InsurgentsIn a written response to a letter from Obama late last month, Zardari said his government was determined to take action against al-Qaeda, the Taliban and allied insurgent groups attacking U.S. forces in Afghanistan from the border area inside Pakistan. But, he said, Pakistan’s efforts would be based on its own timeline and operational needs.

The message was reinforced Monday by Pakistan’s military chief, Gen. Ashfaq Kiyani, who told Gen. David H. Petraeus, the head of the U.S. Central Command, that the United States should not expect “a major operation in North Waziristan” in the coming months, according to a senior U.S. defense official.

North Waziristan, one of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas on the Afghan border, is a sanctuary for the Afghan Taliban.

The letters between the two leaders, while couched in diplomatic niceties and pledging mutual respect and increased cooperation against insurgents, reflect ongoing strains in a relationship that is crucial to both.

Pakistani counterinsurgency operations this year have primarily targeted separate but allied groups — the Pakistani Taliban based in South Waziristan and operating in the Swat Valley region — whose attacks are directed toward Pakistani government targets.

“We’re committed to this war, but we’ll fight it on our terms. . . . We will prioritize targets based on our interests. We don’t want them to be dictated to us,” a Pakistani intelligence official said. He added, “The Pakistani Taliban is the clear and present danger. They are what matters most. Once we are done with them, we will go after the Haqqani network.”

Ortiz, as usual, had a memorable ring entrance with Eminem blaring at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, waving the American flag.

First round:

Ortiz takes a right standing up, but charges and lands a right. Ortiz takes down Griffin and tries to ground and pound with some elbows flying. Griffin gets up, the pair end up reversing each other against the cage.

The co-main event, a welterweight clash pitting San Jose fighters Anthony Johnson and Josh Koscheck, will put the winner in prime position for a title shot at champion Georges St-Pierre.

Koscheck initially got the better of stand-up striking exchanges before Johnson popped in two jabs. Johnson slipped a clench, but then committed a rule-breaking violation by sending a right knee toward Koscheck’s head.

Kneeing on the mat, Koscheck appeared to have got his arm up in time to deflect the blow toward his right eye. Referee Mario Yamasaki stopped the action and deducted a point from Johnson for the illegal knee. A ringside doctor was summoned and reported to the ref that Koscheck had “blurry vision as a result of the foul.”

Still, the fight resumed and Koscheck turned to wrestling. Johnson was seen with a small cut over the left eye.

In the second round, Johnson was poked in the left eye twice in the first minutes. Both fighters had a lively exchange of blows in the center of the octagon. Koscheck got Johnson on his back and sent a few damaging elbows to the 25-year-old’s head.

Stephanie Spielman Death, Stephanie Spielman Died: COLUMBUS, Ohio — Stefanie Spielman, the wife of NFL and Ohio State star Chris Spielman who led a public fight against breast cancer, died Thursday after a lengthy battle with the disease. She was 42.
Stephanie Spielman Death, Stephanie Spielman DiedStefanie Spielman died at the family’s home in Upper Arlington, surrounded by her family, said WBNS radio in Columbus, where Chris Spielman co-hosts a show.

“Stefanie has gone home to be with the Lord,” Chris Spielman said in a statement released by the station. “For that, we celebrate, but with broken hearts. I want to thank everyone for their support over the last 12 years. Together, with your help, hopefully we made a difference in this fight.”

Stefanie Spielman was 30 years old and three months pregnant in 1998 when she detected a lump in her breast. She later miscarried and discovered she had cancer. She survived four bouts with cancer before a fifth recurrence in March.

Chris Spielman was playing linebacker with the Buffalo Bills when he decided to give up football for a year to stay home with his wife and children. When his wife lost her hair because of chemotherapy treatments, he shaved his head.

“People say ‘It’s a great thing that you’re doing,’” Chris Spielman said at the time. “I always say it would be a terrible thing if I didn’t.”

The Spielmans became advocates for breast-cancer detection and research, winning several awards for their dedication to the cause. They raised more than $6 million for breast cancer research at Ohio State, where she also had attended school, through the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

She helped form a support group for young women with breast cancer, hosted an annual event that honored cancer survivors and created a fund to help breast cancer patients and their families who struggled financially. She was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame in 2002 for her work.

“We have lost a leader in the fight against cancer,” seven-time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong said. “Stefanie was a living example of courage and strength to everyone around her.”

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel called Stefanie Spielman an inspiration.

“Stefanie has inspired the entire Buckeye nation and Columbus community with her courage and strength,” Tressel said in a statement. “We will miss her and will always remember the lessons we learned from her. She will always be a special Buckeye.”

Two-time Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin, the president and CEO of the Ohio State Alumni Association, said Stefanie Spielman was a compassionate person who “took her personal struggle and used it as a platform to help other women battling breast cancer.” He said the Ohio State community was “tremendously saddened” by her death.
