North Korea Marks the UN Resolution Political Plot ‘Trivial’

SEOUL : North Korea strenuously defended its human rights record Friday after a UN General Assembly committee said it had ‘very serious concern’ about abuses in the isolated communist country.

A non-binding resolution Thursday from the United Nations General Assembly Third Committee on human rights highlighted “systematic, widespread and grave violations of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights”.

North Korea’s deputy UN representative, Pak Tok-hun, immediately dismissed the findings and the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Friday carried an even stronger denial from a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

“The adoption of the said resolution is nothing but a trite political plot hatched by hostile forces against the DPRK (North Korea) every year,” the spokesman was quoted saying.

He accused the United States of being the driving force behind the move “to fake up again a brigandish document defiling the system in the DPRK and infringing upon its sovereignty…”

“One should keep one’s hands clean before pointing accusing fingers to others,” the spokesman added, namely in reference to the US but also accusing Japan.

Bishops School Pune: Pune, The students of two divisions of the Co-Ed Bishop’s School in Kalyaninagar here have been asked not to attend school for 10 days, after three of positive cases of H1N1 were reported in the school on Friday. The school principal said the class work will be charged on the website for 10 days so that students can study at home.

An urgent notice placed on the school website on 6 November, 2009 by Frank Freese, CEO and Honorary Secretary of the Episcopal School, said: “All parents of students in Class 5 and G-3 – E which takes into account that two positive cases of H1N1 influenza have been registered in class 5-G and one of Class 3-E. Students of these two divisions should not attend school for the next 10 days and all are advised to have their medical examination immediately. ”

When contacted, Fernando Bunyan, director of the school, said: “We need to know about the positive cases on Friday night after we put the notice. Mr. Freese went to government health officials and recommends we close the two classes for 10 days. ”

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday, November 17, `Eid Al-Adha’, one of the two main religious festivals on the Islamic calendar, will fall on Friday, November 27.

“The new moon of Dhul-Hijjah was sighted by trusted witnesses on Tuesday in a number of provinces,” the Supreme Judicial Council said in a statement published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

“Thus, Wednesday, November 18, will mark the beginning of the lunar month of Dhul-Hijjah.”

This means pilgrims will climb Mount `Arafat, where Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered his last sermon 14 centuries ago, on Thursday, November 26.

Standing on Mount `Arafat before sunset marks the climax of hajj and pilgrims who fail to make it on time must repeat their pilgrimage in future.

Every able-bodied adult Muslim — who can financially afford the trip — must perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, once in their lifetime.

Muslims worldwide will then celebrate `Eid Al-Adha’, which marks the end of hajj, on Friday, November 27.
