Ghost Adventures is a one-hour weekly American paranormal reality television series that premiered on October 17, 2008, on the Travel Channel.

The program features ghost hunters Zak Bagans, Nick Groff, and Aaron Goodwin, who investigate places that are reported to be haunted. The show is based on a 2006 documentary film.

The Sci-Fi Channel presented 4Reel Productions’ Ghost Adventures: The Documentary Film in 2006. The documentary centers on Bagans, Groff, and Goodwin’s investigation into alleged paranormal activity in Virginia City, Nevada.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum: The first thing that strikes most visitors to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is its massive size. Constructed between 1858 and 1881, the main structure is 1,296 feet long, consists of 4 floors, 9 acres of floor space, 921 windows and 906 doors. The asylum is considered the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America and the second-largest in the world after the Kremlin.

Located in central West Virginia, the asylum appears to be nestled in the great green Appalachian Mountains, its imposing facade just across the West Fork River serving as the backdrop for the small town of Weston.

The asylum was designed by the renowned architect Richard Snowden Andrews following Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride’s Linear or Moral Treatment Plan for mental health-care facilities. Its long rambling wings were arranged in a staggered formation, assuring that each of the connecting structures was well-ventilated and received an abundance of therapeutic sunlight and fresh air.

Composed primarily of blue sandstone, the German and Irish stone masons carved beautiful arches, moldings, window trims, flowers and Celtic details, such as script, faces and gargoyles onto the exterior of the asylum’s 3-foot-thick walls. Ironically, the gargoyles were thought to ward off evil spirits.

Two of the asylum’s most striking features are the 200-foot central clock tower and the long driveway that encircles a welcoming fountain just beyond the front entrance.

Latest news Updated, Travel Channel, Ghost Adventures Live: Ghost Adventures crew — Zak, Nick and Aaron — will lock themselves into the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in Weston, WV, for the most ambitious paranormal investigation ever attempted. During this 7-hour live event, they will examine the reported hauntings and ghostly activity at this legendary landmark.
Travel Channel, Ghost Adventures Live
Built during the Civil War, the asylum is the second-largest hand-cut stone building in the world. For decades its thick walls housed the insane, the neglected and the unwanted. Violence was a common occurrence and inmates were often subjected to brutal treatment. Shut down permanently in 1994, this massive edifice has remained vacant ever since.

Ghost Adventures will have unprecedented access to the entire asylum — from the seclusion cells, where the most violent patients were shackled, to the medical center, where primitive procedures and autopsies were performed.

To aid in their investigation, Ghost Adventures will interview local witnesses, call on paranormal guest experts and utilize the latest in detection technology. Specialized teams will also be available on-site to research and review evidence as it’s collected.

This event will be completely interactive. While watching the drama unfold on TV, viewers will have complete access to the investigation online through the webcams, live video chat and text messaging.
