LOS ANGELES, News Update: American Music Awards featured memorable performances by artistes like Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood and Black Eyed Peas. Michael Jackson and teen artist Taylor Swift were the big winners at the star-studded awards’ ceremony.

‘King of Pop’ bagged four awards at the award ceremony last night but stopped short of beating Swift, who turned out to be the top winner by collecting five trophies, including Artist of the Year at the 37th American Music Awards. The late singer won in the Favorite Male Artist Soul/R&B and Favorite Male Artist Pop/Rock categories among his four wins, reports said. Jackson’s awards were accepted by brother Jermaine, who said that his brother’s message was just as important as his music.
“The message that Michael had will live on forever. He saw good in everyone and he wanted everyone to do good. He always started with love,” said Jermaine. However, the main highlight of the evening was a series of jaw-dropping performances from some of the biggest names in the business. During the three-hour live show at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Eminem, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, Shakira, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Lopez, Green Day and Adam Lambert all took the stage. True to her reputation, Lady Gaga delivered an eye-popping performance on her new single Bad Romance. She matched a flesh-colored bodysuit with flashing white accessories that mimicked a rib cage. She then picked up her mic stand and smashed open a glass enclosure housing a piano. She climbed up, sat down and played Speechless while flames enveloped the wooden instrument. Whitney Houston was honored with the International Artist of the Year award, joining only six other winners such as Michael Jackson in the history of the AMAs. She also performed on I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.
American Idol star Adam Lambert closed the show with a provocative version of his single, For Your Entertainment. The awards were presented by Kristen Bell, Alex Rodriguez, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Kris Allen, Ne-Yo, Perez Hilton, Drake, Kid Cudi, Samuel L Jackson, Leona Lewis, Seth Greene and Ryan Seacrest. The Awards honor the year’s top-selling artists in eight popular genres. Singer Jennifer Lopez performed onstage.

LOS ANGELES, News update: The ‘Twilight’ vampire romance sequel ‘New Moon’ took a record-breaking bite out of the North American box office this weekend, final figures showed on Monday.

The second big-screen installment adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s phenomenally successful books raked in an astounding 142.8 million dollars in three days, the third biggest opening of all time, Exhibitor Relations said.
Only Batman sequel “The Dark Knight” with 158.4 million dollars and “Spider-Man 3″ with 151.1 million dollars have scored bigger openings.
However, the “New Moon” earnings are considered remarkable because the film was released in November, outside of the traditional summer blockbuster season.
Although the movie was unable to dethrone “The Dark Knight” or “Spider-Man 3″ for highest opening weekend, it did set records for biggest midnight opening and opening day, figures showed.
The “Twilight” franchise follows the fortunes of high school teenager Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, and her vampire lover Edward Cullen, played by British heart-throb Robert Pattinson.
The success of “New Moon” left American football drama “The Blind Side” in second place.
The feel-good film, adapted from Michael Lewis’s 2006 book, is based on the real-life journey from rags to riches of Baltimore Ravens star Michael Oher.
Starring Sandra Bullock as the woman who helps Oher realize his dream, it earned a healthy 34.1 million dollars in its opening weekend.
In third place, end-of-the-world film “2012″ brought in 26.4 million dollars, more than double its next-runner-up, “Planet 51,” with 12.3 million.
“Disney’s A Christmas Carol” earned 12.2 million, trailed by acclaimed abuse saga “Precious” with 10.9 million dollars.
In seventh place was satire “The Men Who Stare At Goats,” starring George Clooney and Jeff Bridges as members of a military unit schooled in psychological warfare. The film took 2.8 million dollars.
Eighth spot was taken by comedy “Couples Retreat,” which earned 1.9 million dollars while extra-terrestrial drama “The Fourth Kind” was ninth with 1.7 million.
Michael Jackson concert movie “This Is It” completed the top 10 with 1.6 million dollars.

Taylor Swift Wins 5 American Music Awards: LOS ANGELES, Taylor Swift Wins 5 American Music Awards, Country crossover star Taylor Swift overshadowed the late Michael Jackson at the American Music Awards on Sunday, winning five prizes including artist of the year.
Jackson, who had been expected to enjoy a clean sweep, ended up with four awards. He and Swift went head-to-head in the artist of the year race, the ceremony’s final prize.
Other multiple winners included hip-hop acts Jay-Z and the Black Eyed Peas, with two each.
Swift, 19, was also named favorite female artist in the pop/rock and country categories, and favorite adult-contemporary artist. Her 2008 album “Fearless,” the best-selling release in the United States this year, was named favorite country album.
She accepted her awards live via satellite from backstage at London’s Wembley Arena, where she will perform a concert on Monday.
“Music has never been ultimately about competition,” Swift said, after winning the artist of the year prize. She said it was an “unimaginable honor” to be cited in the same category as Jackson, and thanked the Jackson family.
Jackson was named favorite male artist in the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories, while his 2003 hits collection “Number Ones” was named favorite album in both those categories. The album is the No. 2 seller this year in the United States.
His brother Jermaine, accompanied by sons Jeremy, Jaafar and Jermajesty, accepted on his behalf. At one point, he thanked Allah “for blessing my entire family.”
Rapper Eminem, making a rare awards-show appearance in the wake of his four nominations, went home empty-handed. Glam-pop singer Lady Gaga, rock band Kings of Leon and jailed rapper T.I., who earned three nominations each, were also snubbed.
The Black Eyed Peas were named favorite group in both the pop/rock and soul/R&B categories. Jay-Z won favorite male artist and favorite album in the rap/hip-hop categories. His wife Beyonce, who was performing a show in Dublin, was named favorite female artist in the soul/R&B category.
Punk rock trio Green Day won the favorite alternative artist. Rascal Flatts won favorite country group for the fourth year in a row.
The performance-heavy show included some notable scenes. Openly gay “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert kissed a keyboardist of indeterminate gender and rubbed a male dancer’s face in his crotch. Jennifer Lopez, meanwhile, landed on her bottom after jumping off the arched back of one of her dancers.
Nominees are determined by radio airplay and retail sales, while members of the public determine the winners through online voting. That’s why Jackson got so many nominations, even though he didn’t release any new material.

Hudson to Play Nelson Mandela’s Ex-Wife

LOS ANGELES: Oscar-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson is to play the role of Winnie Mandela, the controversy-plagued ex-wife of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela in a new movie called Winnie, Variety reported on Wednesday.

The film is based on the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life, according to Variety.
Production is scheduled to begin May 30 in the South African locations of Johannesburg, Cape Town, Transkei and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela served 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment.
The movie is the second about the Mandelas this year, with Morgan Freeman set to star as the iconic president in the Clint Eastwood film Invictus, which is due in cinemas in December.
Hudson, who is expected to sing the film’s theme song, won the Oscar for her screen debut in Dreamgirls and followed with The Secret Life of Bees and Sex in the City.
“I was compelled and moved when I read the script,” Hudson said. “Winnie Mandela is a complex and extraordinary woman and I’m honoured to be the actress asked to portray her. This is a powerful part of history that should be told.”
Winnie Mandela was a fierce opponent to apartheid alongside her husband before the end of the racist regime. But she was tarnished by an association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year-old alleged informer in 1989. The Mandelas divorced in 1996 and she was convicted of fraud in 2003 for stealing from a funeral fund.
Winnie will be directed by Darrell J. Roodt, the veteran South African filmmaker whose 2006 film Yesterday was Africa’s Best Foreign Film nominee, and who also directed Cry, The Beloved Country and Sarafina!

Penelope Cruz Has A Dream Year in Film
November 19, 2009 by lee

LOS ANGELES: Penelope Cruz feels uncomfortable talking about nude scenes and says she has “an allergy to labels,” but she becomes effusive when discussing her “dream year” with two special films about to hit theaters.

The first is Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces,” her fourth collaboration with the filmmaker who helped make her a star, and the second is musical “Nine” from director Rob Marshall, which challenged her voice and her previously little-known dancing skills.
Both films hope to win over Oscar voters during Hollywood’s awards season, and after her own Academy Award-winning turn in Woody Allen comedy “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” last year, Cruz is again earning some early Oscar buzz — doubled.
“I feel like I have learned a lot. The movies could not be more different,” the Spanish beauty told reporters recently.
“To be able to sing for the first time professionally and dance (in ‘Nine’), it was a scary experience. ‘Broken Embraces’ is like three women in one. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.”
“Broken Embraces” opens on Friday after turns at the Cannes and Toronto film festivals where it earned good marks from critics. Review website rottentomatoes.com gives it an 82 percent positive rating.
Cruz calls both movies homages to cinema — “Nine” to the work of the Italian director Federico Fellini, and “Broken Embraces” to the tradition of film noir.
After playing a prostitute, a nun who falls in love with a transvestite, and a woman whose husband is buried in the fridge in previous Almodovar movies, Cruz tackles the part of a poor assistant to a powerful tycoon in “Broken Embraces.”
But as lowly as her character starts out, she goes on to become the rich man’s partner and then plays a figure counter to herself in a movie within the movie. While it sounds somewhat complicated, it is vintage Almodovar.
“Every time Pedro has given me a script, I have really been blown away. The characters (I have played) couldn’t be more different from each other, and from who I am,” she said.
In “Nine,” from Oscar-winning “Chicago” director Marshall, Cruz shows audiences another new facet of her many talents.
The Fellini-inspired movie, in which she teams with Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Daniel Day Lewis, Sophia Loren and Marion Cotillard, does not open in the United States until Dec. 25, but already a brief clip of Cruz in a bustier performing a sultry song and dance is making waves among movie fans.
Cruz, 35, had early ambitions to be a dancer, taking ballet classes in her native Madrid from 5 to 15-years-old, but dramatic acting took its course and stardom ensued.
So, she went back to training five hours-a-day for her role as the mistress of a middle-aged moviemaker in “Nine,” after being shown the routine she would be asked to perform.
“I almost fainted. I thought this is impossible…But there was no way to fake anything,” she said.
While she is happy to talk freely about career, her personal life remains very private, and questions were banned about her two-year romance with Spanish actor Javier Bardem .
Although she may seem at ease with nude scenes in “Broken Embraces,” she won’t talk about them, saying it is too “uncomfortable” to do so.
And she sees herself as neither a role model, nor feminist in a male-dominated movie world.
“I just try not to label myself in any way. I have an allergy to labels in general,” she said, then smiled.

LOS ANGELES : Hollywood power couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are trying their hand at something new to dazzle their fans — designing a jewelry collection.
The “Protector” collection, designed for luxury British jeweler Asprey, is a range of gold jewelry and silver accessories that features snakes, considered a symbol of protection and admired by Jolie.
Jolie, listed as Hollywood’s top-earning actress by Forbes earlier this year, was first given a snake ring during her first pregnancy with daughter Shiloh, who was born in 2006. The couple now have six children.
All net proceeds from the jewelry will be donated to the charity Education Partnership for Children of Conflict (EPCC), which Jolie co-founded in 2006 to raise money for educating child victims of war, conflict and natural disasters.
Prices start at $525 for a silver spoon with a snaked-shaped handle. The line also including pendants, bracelets, rings and an egg cup.
Asprey officials told Reuters Television that it took more than a year for the duo to design the limited-edition collection, which goes on sale this week at Asprey stores in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo and Dubai.
