Martin Maher West Point
Martin Maher West Point: latest news about, In 1898 at the U.S. Military Academy, a young captain named John J. Pershing swore in an even younger new recruit, Pvt. Martin Maher. Maher, who had arrived in his new country just two years before from Ireland’s County Tipperary, was as new to West Point then as each year’s new cadets, or “plebes.” After over three decades encountering plebes and upperclassmen, Maher would earn a place in the hearts of countless graduates and, through his memoirs, a place in the memory of countless filmgoers.
Soon after his enlistment, Maher was assigned to the West Point gymnasium. He claimed he couldn’t swim a stroke, but as the Department of Physical Training’s swimming instructor from 1899 to 1928, he made sure that each and every cadet could.
“It has been argued that Marty Maher knew personally more officers in the United States Army than any other person alive,” the U.S.M.A. Public Affairs Office says. From Pershing to Patton, Bradley to Bolivar, Maher knew them all — and he learned more than just their names. The scrappy young Irishman knew them well, and loved them. His work ethic, enthusiasm, and affection for the corps of cadets inspired many to love him, too –he was named an honorary member of the classes of 1912, 1926 and 1928.
As Maher progressed through the ranks to technical sergeant (E-7), he essentially grew up along with many young officers; as he matured, he nurtured them. The novelization of his life was aptly titled “Bringing Up the Brass.” One of Maher’s former swimming students, Dwight D. Eisenhower, wrote the foreword: “I cannot put too high an estimate on the help [Maher] gave my morale. Marty, with his Irish wit and his talent for understanding, did the same for many, many others … This foreword is meant to be a testament of the admiration and affection one soldier feels for an old friend, associate and helper, Sgt. Marty Maher of West Point.”
Maher’s impressions and memories of West Point in the book were so vivid that director John Ford made them into what is still called the best movie about the U.S. Military Academy — “The Long Gray Line. Starring Tyrone Power as Maher and Maureen O’Hara as his wife, Mary, the film provides a warm and humorous noncommissioned officer’s perspective on our nation’s oldest officer training institute.

Mary Weiland, Forsberg Mary Weiland
latest news updated, Mary Weiland, Forsberg Mary Weiland Mary Weiland was the wife of Scott Weiland, lead singer of the 1990s grunge band Stone Temple Pilots. I will never forget his song “Interstate Love Song” for many reasons, I will not mention here.
Forsberg Mary Weiland recently wrote about his time with Scott and the band in his memoir, “Fall to Pieces: A Memoir of Drugs, Rock n ‘Roll’, and mental illness.” Mary, a divorced former model, wrote the book with Larkin Warren, a former editor of Esquire.
It seems that Scott and Mary lived to the name of the band by getting stoned all the time. Both are linked to heroin. Mary recalls once soared as both had to wear long-sleeved shirts to hide the needle marks when he attended a July fourth launched by Leonardo DiCaprio in his Malibu home.
I remembered a scene from the film “Waiting to Exhale” When I read what Mary did in March 2007. It appears that Scott’s closet dragged into his path and set it on fire. She landed in a psychiatric hospital with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder for their actions. (Do not remember that happening in the movie.)
Mary said the experience of fire, “The fire was huge and very pretty. Everything went up in smoke quickly, except footwear of leather, Gucci was the longest. News reports said they had burned $ 10,000 worth of Scott’s clothes, he was wrong by a factor of eight. I was a little insulted in his estimate: “Eighty thousand dollars, Maria, said later.
Mary was just 16 when he entered a life of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll to include heroin and crack. Scott Weiland is credited with the breakup of the band because of their wild behavior.
The memoirs of Mary was released on 10 November if you want to read more. It is sad to think that these guys were so stoned when they sang some of my favorite songs.

A Moveable Feast
Latest News Updated, A Moveable Feast: A Moveable Feast is a set of memoirs by American author Ernest Hemingway about his years in Paris as part of the American expatriate circle of writers in the 1920s. In addition to painting a picture of Hemingway’s time as a struggling young writer, the book also sketches the story of Hemingway and his first wife, Hadley.
A Moveable Feast is considered by many to contain some of his best writing. Some of the prominent people to make an appearance in the book include Aleister Crowley, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ford Madox Ford, Hilaire Belloc, Pascin, John Dos Passos, James Joyce and Gertrude Stein. The book was edited by Ernest’s fourth wife, Mary Hemingway, and published in 1964, four years after Hemingway’s death.
The book contains Hemingway’s personal accounts, observations, and stories of his experience in 1920s Paris. He provides the detail of specific addresses of cafes, bars, hotels, and apartments that still can be found in modern day Paris. The title was suggested by Hemingway’s friend A.E. Hotchner, author of Papa Hemingway, and comes from a conversation the two once had about the city during Hotchner’s first visits there:
“If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.”
Editing by Mary Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway worked on the manuscript of A Moveable Feast during his later years, painstakingly rewriting several key passages, and had prepared a final draft before he died. After his death, however, his fourth wife, Mary, in her capacity as Hemingway’s literary executor, engaged in extensive editing. Literary scholar Gerry Brenner from the University of Montana documents her edits and questions their validity in many cases in his paper, “Are We Going to Hemingway’s Feast?”, concluding that some of them were misguided, and others derived from questionable motives. This would contradict with Mary’s stated policy for her role as executor, which had been an avowed hands-off approach.
After examining the vast collection of Ernest Hemingway’s personal papers, which were opened to the public in 1979 with the opening of the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston and included notes and initial drafts of A Moveable Feast, Brenner indicates that Mary changed the order of the chapters in Hemingway’s final draft, to “preserve chronology”. Brenner notes how this seems to disrupt the intent of the book, interrupting the series of juxtaposed character sketches between such individuals as Sylvia Beach (owner of the bookstore “Shakespeare and Company”) and Gertrude Stein. Additionally, Brenner points out that one whole chapter, titled “Birth of a New School”, which had been dropped by Hemingway altogether, was inserted back in by Mary without sufficient justification in its contents or execution.
By far the most serious edit, Brenner alleges, is that Mary deleted a lengthy apology to Hadley, Hemingway’s first wife and perhaps intended heroine. This apology appeared in various forms in every draft of the book, and Brenner suggests that Mary deleted it because it impugned her own role as wife with its implications that Hadley was the most important spouse.

The Haunted Preston Castle
The Haunted Preston Castle: HPI Chronicles: The Haunted Preston Castle, The Ione Hotel, CJs and a Private Residence By Paul Dale Roberts, HPI Ghostwriter.
Jennifer S, a HPI Ghosthunter-in-Training came all the way from San Jose to my home to do some ghosthunting on this super hot Saturday – May 17, 2008. The ghosthunting we will do, will happen in the small town of Ione. Jennifer was very enthusiastic and didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t have a hard time persuading her to get in my vehicle, the Ghost Tracker. I turned up the tunes…Shotgun by Jr. Walker and the All Stars and headed down the lonely stretch of highway towards Ione. Our first stop was the Ione Hotel. We introduced ourselves to Jennifer Leigh Collado. Jennifer Collado is the hotel manager and head housekeeper. Jennifer with her little girl charm was willing to take us on a grand tour of the hotel. She explains that the hotel was built in 1877. She has worked here since Feb 08 and loves her job! The short time that she has worked here, she has already experienced strange things. Once she was locked in Room 2. She heard the door click behind her and after twisting the door knob a few times, she knew she was trapped in this room. The hotel staff below came running up the stairs to help her and no one could get the door open. She was trapped in this room for 2 hours, finally she had to go out the window. Once, while walking down the hallway, the lights would either get dimmer or brighter and seemed to follow her down the hallway. She has seen shadowy figures run past her. In Room 4, the chandeliers spun around on their own accord.
She has heard stories from guests. One guest claims they saw a smoky haze encircle one of the pillars. Jennifer gleefully shows me some strange photos she took of herself in the hallway mirror. The image shows her face distorted, while below her is a strange mist that almost looks like a smear. There were two photos that depicts the mist image near her face and the third picture is normal. While I am interviewing Jennifer Collado, Jennifer S is taking photographs all over the hotel. Jennifer S captured some orb activity in her photos. One orb looks blue in color. Jennifer Collado explains to me that the hotel caught on fire in 1884 and 1893. George Williams a guest of the hotel died in one of the fires at the hotel and some patrons believe that George still patrols the hallways of the hotel. George was known as a lady’s man and jokester. Another victim of the fire was the baby of Mary Phelps (another patron). Mary caught on fire and was screaming for her baby to be saved. Jennifer Collado opened up some of the rooms for us and in Room 13, she showed us the infamous ‘upside down black rose’ that is on the wall. They have tried to wash the upside down rose off and it still appears on the wall. Room 13 is a strange room and Jennifer Collado has felt something odd in this room. Jennifer Collado tells me how two guests in one room, both woke up and found themselves speaking in a strange language. Jennifer Collado feels like she can sense paranormal activity on a more heightened level, which probably makes her an empath. It was a pleasure interviewing Jennifer Collado, because she really does have a little girl quality and she explains how she loves to slide in her socks on the hard wood floor of the hotel. She even gave us a small demonstration. Jennifer S and I, finished up with our preliminary scouting investigation of the Ione Hotel and headed up the street to the Amador County Library. We couldn’t get inside, but I would love to check this old building out, for any signs of past residual energy. Jennifer S and I, were now parched and decided to inhale some sodas at the Pizza Factory before making our next move.
After we quenched our thirst, we headed over to the Preston Castle. We met up with Marie Nutting – President of the Preston Castle Foundation. All I can say is….’wow!’ I can see why this place looks like a castle. Check out some of the photos here:
http://ghosts.meetup.com/231/photos/
Marie explains that this was the first correctional youth facility in California. The place does look like a castle! I have seen many castles in Europe and this structure was quite impressive and can be compared to some European castles. It was built in 1894. Some people think that this castle has about 3 or 4 ghosts residing inside. One of the stories, is that an employee was kicked to death by an inmate during the 50s. Her ghost may be one of the resident ghosts. Many inmates have died here and not too far away is an inmate cemetery with about 23 graves. Many people have felt strange things when entering this castle. Many people also say they feel cold spots. The inmates while staying here, were referred to as the wards of the State. The castle staff members also resided in this castle. So, you would have the wards of the State staying on one end, while the staff members stayed on another end. Jennifer S. snapped all kinds of photos inside and captured a green orb inside the premises. As I was leaving Preston Castle, I did an illegal U-Turn and Ione’s Finest pulled me over. I always get stopped in these small towns. The officer, a very friendly guy explained what I did and how it was illegal. Then I explained how I was a journalist that was writing a story about the Ione Hotel and Preston Castle. He listened to some of my paranormal stories and did a bit of chuckling. I gave him my business card and told him if he ever witnessed anything paranormal to give me a call. He finally looked at me and said, I am going to give you a warning this time and letting you go! Whew! Close call! What a nice guy!

Mary Travers Dead
Mary Travers, a striking figure of power and glamour in the early-1960s folk music movement, died Wednesday at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut after suffering from leukemia for several years. She was 72.

She was best known as the blond with the bangs who commanded the middle microphone with Peter, Paul and Mary, a trio that brought folk music from coffeehouses to top-40 radio.
They also gave much of America its first taste of the young Bob Dylan by helping to turn his “Blowin’ in the Wind” into a national anthem.
The group reunited several years ago to begin touring, and Travers performed with them until a few months ago, even when she needed assistance on stage.
Travers, like Paul Stookey and Peter Yarrow, saw folk music both as an art and as an instrument for change. They sang a number of sociopolitical songs, which Travers later defended.
“I’m not sure I want to be singing ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ when I’m 75,” she said in one interview. “But I know I’ll still be singing ‘Blowin’ in the Wind.’ ”
She was born in Louisville, Ky., but grew up in Greenwich Village and came up through the New York coffeehouse circuit, singing on her own before she was put together with Stookey and Yarrow by famed manager Albert Grossman, who also managed Dylan.
The trio took considerable criticism from fellow folk singers for developing a sound that some considered too “commercial” and not “authentic” enough.
Travers always strongly defended the trio’s sound, saying that they were in the folk tradition by making music accessible to everyone, not just academic collectors.
Peter, Paul and Mary were inducted into the Sammy Cahn Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006. Travers is survived by two daughters.
