Google News: latest news about Google News updates, The FCC has called off negotiations with major Internet industry players to arrive at a compromise for net neutrality. The meetings were an attempt to come to an amicable agreement over net neutrality rules and dodge political pressure over FCC jurisdiction and authority–but asking the fox how to protect the henhouse is generally unwise.

Reports of a secret deal between Verizon and Google for preferential treatment of Google traffic on Verizon’s networks may have been a catalyst to the breakdown of negotiations. But, whether that is true or not, the end of the negotiations is great for the future of the Internet. The FCC is supposed to provide guidance and oversight of these Internet industry stakeholders–not the other way around.
Andrew Jay Schwartzman, Senior Vice President and Policy Director of Media Access Project, had this to say about the rumored Google-Verizon deal. “What is good for Google and Verizon is not necessarily good for innovation and competition on the Internet. What the two companies have in common is that both are incumbents with dominant positions in their markets. It’s no wonder they are prepared to strike a deal that protects their market position at the detriment of the next Verizon and the next Google.”
Schwartzman added this advice for the FCC. “The Commission should complete what it has started by bringing broadband services back under its jurisdiction as soon as possible, instead of pursuing its fruitless efforts at a short-term backroom compromise on net neutrality. A regulatory agency like the FCC should not be making deals with the biggest companies any more than it should countenance private side deals that achieve the same outcome. These arrangements could sacrifice successful implementation of the National Broadband Plan as well as broader free speech, privacy, disability, public safety, and consumer protections.”
I have to say, I agree with Schwartzman’s sentiment. Companies either follow the rules, or they don’t. There are no negotiations. When government agencies try to play nice with the industries they are tasked to oversee and include key stakeholders in developing the framework of rules they are supposed to follow, we end up with Enron, the meltdown of Wall Street, the BP oil fiasco in the Gulf, and people dying from taking Vioxx.
We don’t expect the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) to let farmers dictate what quality of meat is good enough for Americans to consume. We don’t expect the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) to check with Columbian drug cartels to negotiate how much cocaine should be allowed into the country. And, we don’t expect DHS (Department of Homeland Security) to talk to Al Qaeda to select which individuals should be closely monitored for terrorist activity. Why should the FCC consult with the industry it is supposed to police?

Fulton Dropped, Paid Price for Poor Performance

WELLINGTO News Updates: Peter Fulton has paid the price for a poor run of form. South African-born batsman BJ Watling is poised to make his test cricket debut in the series finale against Pakistan in Napier from Friday after joining the squad today at the expense of Peter Fulton.

Watling, 24, is the only change in a 13-man squad named for the third test as New Zealand’s selection panel moved to partially remedy a batting unit guilty of under-performing in Dunedin and Wellington, nzherald.co.nz reported.
Watling opens the batting for Northern Districts and is also capable of filling a position in the middle order.
He could replace an out-of-form Tim McIntosh and form a new opening partnership with Martin Guptill or be a straight swap for Fulton at No 5.
Fulton’s comeback to test cricket was unspectacular – 42 runs at 10.5 and memorable for his duck in the second innings at Dunedin when he failed to request a review of his leg before wicket dismissal despite suspecting the ball had hit his bat.
McIntosh retains his place in the squad despite scoring 37 runs at 9.25. Flynn, 57 runs at 14.25, and Guptill, 75 at 18.75, have also been persevered with.
Long identified as a player for the future, Watling made his New Zealand debut during the Twenty20 component of the Pakistan tour last month in the United Arab Emirates.
Watling, who made his first class debut in 2004-05, pushed for selection thanks to compelling form in the current Plunket Shield four-day competition – 241 runs at 80.33 including scores of 90 and 136.
Tours to Australia and India with the Emerging Players and A teams during the New Zealand winter also indicated the right hander and capable wicketkeeper was in contention.
“He’s a quality young player with good technique,” selector Mark Greatbatch said.
Although New Zealand were beaten by 141 runs in the second test at the Basin Reserve inside four days yesterday – principally because they made only 99 in their first innings – Greatbatch said widespread changes were never likely.
“There was a lot of discussion about the batting line-up, but this was not a time for wholesale change. We are aiming to give guys the opportunity to succeed,” he said.
Black Caps squad
Daniel Vettori (captain), Tim McIntosh, Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Grant Elliott, Brendon McCullum, Daryl Tuffey, Iain O’Brien, Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel, Chris Martin.

India Vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test at Mumbai Today

India Vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test at Mumbai Today: The third and final Test between India and Sri Lanka starts this morning at 9:30 AM IST at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. India cannot lose this 3-Test Series having drawn the first one at Ahmedabad and then clinching an innings win at Kanpur.

The pressure is very much on the Sri Lankans with the bowlers getting plenty of humiliation having taken for three consecutive big totals by the Indians. The batsmen are now feeling the heat as well having failed to counter India’s 600-plus total on a good batting track at Kanpur. Sri Lanka have dropped Ajantha Mendis after getting clobbered in the second Test and he just couldn’t hold onto any consistent lengths. The visitors are likely to bring in swing bowler Nuwan Kulasekara in place of him. Watch Live Cricket Match
For Sri Lanka, the aging Muttiah Muralidaran will continue to be a big worry. The off spinner for once has been really struggling to bowl six good balls in an over. Like never before, Murali has been dropping the ball too short which has been failing him in sustaining any sort of pressure on the batsmen. The Lankans were delighted when left arm swing bowler Chanaka Welegedara shook the Indian top order on the first day morning of the Ahmedabad Test taking three wickets. But since that Test, the Indian batsmen have done their homework against him and know quite well which way the ball is swinging.
India will remain upbeat despite losing Gautam Gambhir in this Test. Gambhir’s replacement – Murali Vijay is a class of his own and should be able to deal with any kind of bowler. The hosts are surely going to retain the same XI except for Vijay in for Gambhir. India will be looking to do everything to prevent Sri Lanka from tasting their first ever test win in their country. India’s problem has been Zaheer Khan as the left armer had struggled with his rhythm. Zaheer has been bogged down by plenty of no-balls in the last test.
The pitch at the Brabourne Stadium is expected to be a sportive one. It will not be a cakewalk for the batsmen. There could be some nice carry and pace on this track to help both the pacers and spinners. Swing is expected to be the key factor in this Test Match because of the venue being very close to the sea. Evening time could see plenty of action for the pacers. Sri Lanka have Nuwan Kulasekara to take full advantage of the humid conditions while India have a better bowler in Sreesanth who has that brisk pace to complement his seam and swing bowling.

PARIS, News Update: France’s first lady, singing ex-supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, has agreed to star in US auteur Woody Allen’s next movie, she told a television interviewer.
“He suggested I appear in his next film. I don’t know what the role would be, but I said yes,” the 41-year-old Italian-born singer-songwriter told the main evening entertainment show on the Canal+ network.
“I go into everything blindly, or I’d never do anything at all,” she added, apparently referring to her showbiz career rather than to her sudden marriage last year to President Nicolas Sarkozy.
“I’m not an actress at all. Perhaps I’ll be completely hopeless but I can’t miss an opportunity like this one. When I’m a grandmother I’d like to be able to say I made a film with Woody Allen,” she gushed.
“Woody Allen kindly asked me not to do a film with anyone else before him. If anything concrete ever comes of it, it’ll be a great experience for me.”
New York filmmaker Allen visited the French first couple in June this year during a trip to Paris to promote his last movie “Whatever Works”.
Asked whom he would like to cast in his next film, he said: “Without question, Carla Bruni! I’m sure she would be wonderful. She has charisma, and she performs, so she’s not a stranger to an audience.”
