Oakland Tribune, Oakland News, Oakland Verdict, Oakland Riots: latest news about Oakland Tribune, Oakland News, Oakland Verdict, Oakland Riots updates, Oscar Grant, a 25 year old unarmed black man was killed last year after being shot in the back by a San Francisco/Oakland BART police officer, Johannes Mehserle, while he was handcuffed laying on the ground.

Late Thursday evening, the jury in the case against Johannes Mehserle, found the officer guilty of involuntary manslaughter, with a possible sentence of 2-4 years.

This was far less than the family of Oscar Grant and his supporters wanted and now the anger has taken to the street of Oakland aka The Town. At first the march through the city was peaceful with about 1000 people protesting the verdict.

At about 9PM PST, the frustration grew and the rioting began.  A foot locker has been looted and there have been numerous confrontations with the police.  Dozens have been arrested and it seems like it is only going to get worse.

Here are pictures of the escalation of the protest. An attorney for the family of the man shot to death by a former Oakland transit officer says they are “extremely disappointed” with the verdict against the officer.

Nike Women S Marathon 2009 Results: Latest news about Nike Women s Marathon, The annual Nike marathon will take place on this Sunday at San Francisco. It will start at 7a.m. in the morning sharp. The race is organized by Nike every year, in an attempt to raise funds for the treatment of those with leukemia. This year, the race will symbolically start at San Francisco’s Union Square where is situated the huge bronze statue of the goddess of victory, Nike. The rest of the course is punctuated with aid stations where they provide refreshments and water.
There is also the obligatory coat check area where the participants have to get their clothes checked and deposit them until the race is over. The more philanthropically inclined can also donate those to the destitute and needy.

The idea of the race that clicks so much with the women of the country is the freedom it provides from the daily household chores. It is one day of being completely free, leaving behind the family and pressures of a job. The Nike team does not emphasize on winning, it rather stresses on the running, with the motto, “I run because I can.”

The sixth annual Nike Womens’ Marathon this year will start at the Union Square at San Francisco. The participants will then run their way through such prominent landmarks as Coit Tower, San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge and many others.

The marathon promises to be an exciting and rewarding experience for all the participants. Besides promoting a noble cause, it also helps boost the economy of the city as many small companies sponsor the race.

Over 20,000 women took to the streets of San Francisco today to run the 2009 Nike women’s marathon and to raise $14 million for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

At the end of the race it was Californian Caitlin Smith of Oakland who finished the full marathon first in a time of 2:58:52.

At the half marathon distance it was Carrie Dimoff of Portland, Ore. who won with a time of 1:25:26.

“I loved the race,” said Barb Mica who completed the half marathon. “It was very hilly but scenic. The runners are all so polite compared to coed triathlon it felt like a bunch of nice girls,” she added.

At the end of the race Firefighters handed out small wrapped Tiffany and Co. boxes to the finishers that held a silver necklace with the inscription “Run Like a Girl.”

Jack Lalanne

Jack LaLanne (born September 26, 1914) is an American fitness, exercise, nutritional expert, and motivational speaker who has been referred to as “the godfather of fitness”. He has published books on fitness. He also hosted a long-running fitness television show between 1951 and 1985.

LaLanne gained worldwide renown for his success as a bodybuilder, as well as his prodigious feats of strength. He has won numerous awards, including the Horatio Alger Award from the Association of Distinguished Americans and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hall of Fame.
Born in San Francisco, California, the son of French immigrants, Jennie Garaig La Lanne (28 October 1884 – 14 December 1973) and John/Jean La Lanne (19 May 1881 – 17 September 1939). Jack also had an older brother, Norman LaLanne (31 August 1908 – 24 September 2005).

LaLanne says that as a child he was addicted to sugar and junk food. At age 15, he heard Paul Bragg give a talk on health and nutrition. Bragg’s message was very simple but had a powerful influence on LaLanne, who subsequently decided to focus on his diet and exercise habits. He studied Henry Gray’s Anatomy of the Human Body and concentrated on bodybuilding and weightlifting. In 1935, LaLanne graduated from Berkeley High School.

Fitness career
Health clubs

LaLanne attended night school at Oakland Chiropractic College in San Francisco (which eventually merged with Los Angeles Chiropractic College), and graduated with a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree. In 1936, he decided to open his own health spa (gym) in Oakland, California and encourage clients to better themselves through weight-training. LaLanne designed the first leg extension machines, pulley machines using cables, and weight selectors which are now standard in the fitness industry. He was the original inventor of the Smith machine.

LaLanne also encouraged women to lift weights (in spite of the fact that at the time it was thought this would make women look masculine and unattractive). By the 1980s, there were more than 200 health clubs bearing his name. LaLanne eventually licensed all his health clubs to the Bally company, and they became known as Bally Total Fitness. Today he is no longer associated with any gym but still actively lifts weights.

Books, television and other media

Between 1951 and 1985, Jack LaLanne presented fitness and exercise advice on television. “The Jack LaLanne Show” was the longest running television exercise program.

It began as a local program on San Francisco’s ABC television station, KGO-TV, and was eventually carried on the ABC network nationwide. Critics said the show would last less than six weeks, but it ended up lasting 34 years. In 1959, LaLanne recorded Glamour Stretcher Time, a workout album which provided phonograph-based instruction for exercising with an elastic cord called the Glamour Stretcher.

LaLanne has also published books and videos on fitness and nutrition, appeared in films, recorded a song with Connie Haines and marketed exercise equipment, a range of vitamin supplements, as well as two models of electric juicers. These included the “Juice Tiger”, as seen on Amazing Discoveries with Mike Levey and “Jack LaLanne’s Power Juicer”. It was on this show that LaLanne introduced the phrase “That’s the power of the juice!”

70,000 Juice Tiger juicers were recalled in March 1996 after “14 incidents resulting in at least eight lacerations to the hands, face, arms, and chest and one permanent eye injury were reported to the CPSC and National Media Corporation of The USA.” However, this is about 9 percent of the Juice Tiger models. Another 600,000 units were not recalled. The Power Juicer is still actively marketed.

Later life

At the age of 94, Jack LaLanne continues to work out every morning for two hours, spending 1 ½ hours in the weight room and ½ hour swimming or walking. LaLanne and his wife Elaine (83) live in Morro Bay, California.

When interviewed by Katie Couric on NBC’s Today show, LaLanne declared that his two simple rules of nutrition are “if man made it, don’t eat it”, and “if it tastes good, spit it out.” He often says, “I cannot afford to die, it will ruin my image.” Interviewed on his 93rd birthday, he said his feat of strength was going to be “towing my wife across the bathtub.” In a June 2007 interview, he said that for his 95th birthday, he’d like to swim to Santa Catalina Island from the coast of California, a distance of approximately 20 miles (32 km).

Jack was an Inaugural Inductee into the National Fitness Hall of Fame in 2005.

On December 15, 2008, in a ceremony presided over by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, Jack LaLanne was inducted into the California Hall of Fame, located at The California Museum for History, Women and the Arts alongside 11 other legendary Californians. Jack LaLanne’s exhibit at the museum features his original work-out equipment and videos of his TV appearances and is on display through 31 October 2009.

Tila Tequila Bruises

Tila Tequila bruises-the black proof of reality TV star, Tila Tequila, against her white lie that she never drinks, she revealed her bruises arm as an evidence of her boy friends Shawne Merriman’s assault on her. It’s quite clear from Tila Tequila bruises that she has been treated violently. There’s a huge black and blue mark on her left arm.

The contusions represent the first evidence of Tila’s current squabble with her boyfriend Shawne Merriman, at Stingaree night club, on 5th Sep, 2009. According to reports, Merriman had choked and assaulted Tila last weekend; consequently she has to go to hospital and Marriman to jail. Marriman, a football player, argufies all her claims and says that he was simply trying to keep her from drinking and driving in intoxicating condition, as the story proceeds, Tila then executed a citizen arrest against her boyfriend, charging him for false detention and battery.

When it is asked from Tila, after showing her bruises, if she will forgive Merriman or will press charges, she replied, “I don’t know, we’ll see.” By her remarks, it is clear that Tila attitude is not much anguish as it should be if Shawne Merriman really did that she is claiming. If she is speaking truth, she should reveal these bruises before court not before public, she is just trying to catch attention by mean ways and soon she will go back to being “friends” with Shawne Merriman and if choking is really involved than Shawne should pay for this misdeed.

Early Sunday morning, Shawne Merriman was arrested on suspicion of physically assaulting Tila Tequila, a model and television personality. He was taken into San Diego County Jail.

Tequila, whose real name is Tila Nguyen, placed a call at 3:45 a.m., accusing Merriman of choking and physically restraining her. She claims Merriman prevented her from being able to leave his house, and signed a citizen’s arrest warrant at the scene, charging him with battery and false imprisonment.

Tequila was taken to a hospital following the alleged incident. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jan Caldwell stated at a news conference that deputies determined she had been drinking, but she wasn’t sure about Merriman. Caldwell also said there were other people at the house.

On her Twitter account Sunday evening, Tequila said she had arrived back home safely in Los Angeles and thanked fans for all their love and support. In addition, she disputed reports that she was drinking, saying “I am allergic to alcohol. It has been publicly known for years. That is how I got the name Tila “Tequila” cuz the irony. I cant drink.”

After winning Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2005, Merriman was suspended for four games in 2006 for a positive steroid test. In 2008, reconstructive knee surgery forced Merriman to miss almost the entire season after conflicting information floated around training camp and preseason about whether or not he’d be able to play. The Chargers’ defense fell to 25th in the league in total defense in ‘08 after finishing 14th in 2007.

It’s far too early to begin discussing possible legal or occupational repercussions (if any) for Merriman; there will surely be more details to emerge from this story before the dust settles.

General manager A.J. Smith, however, quickly issued a statement on Sunday that implied the Chargers will not take immediate disciplinary action against Merriman.

“It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving
Shawne Merriman,” Smith said in the statement. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.”

The Chargers drafted outside linebacker Larry English in the first round of this year’s draft to improve depth and talent at the position, but Merriman’s healthy return had many people viewing the Chargers as a possible Super Bowl team.

San Diego opens the regular season next Monday night at Oakland, and Chargers players have been off since Friday’s exhibition finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
