Lee Boyd Malvo
Lee Boyd Malvo, John Allen Muhammad (born December 31, 1960) is a spree killer from the United States. With his younger partner, Lee Boyd Malvo, he carried out the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks, killing 10 people. Muhammad and Malvo were arrested in connection with the attacks on October 24, 2002, following tips from alert citizens. Born John Allen Williams, Muhammad joined the Nation of Islam in 1987 and later changed his surname to Muhammad. Drawings by Malvo describe the murders as part of a “jihad” (Arabic for “struggle”). At Muhammad’s trial, the prosecutor claimed that the rampage was part of a plot to kill his ex-wife and regain custody of his children, but the judge ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support this argument.
His trial for one of the murders (the murder of Dean Harold Meyers in Prince William County, Virginia) began in October 2003, and the following month, he was found guilty of capital murder. Four months later he was sentenced to death. While awaiting execution in Virginia, in August 2005, he was extradited to Maryland to face some of the charges there, for which he was convicted of six counts of first-degree murder on May 30, 2006. Upon completion of the trial activity in Maryland, it was planned that he next be returned to Virginia’s death row unless some agreement is reached with another state or the District of Columbia seeking to try him. He has not been tried on additional charges in other Virginia jurisdictions, and faces potential trials in three other states and the District of Columbia involving other deaths and serious woundings. Some appeals had been made and rejected, but others remained pending.

ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Standard Time was reversed by one hour on the night between Saturday (October 31) and Sunday (November 1). The government had decided to advance the clocks by one hour on April 15 to take maximum benefit of the daylight to conserve electricity, which is now being reversed. It was the decision of Federal Cabinet to advance the clocks by one hour every year with the advent of summer to overcome the energy crisis and use maximum daylight.
Pakistan experimented to advance one hour time in 2002 on the first Sunday in April at 00:00 to first Sunday in October at 00:00. The country started to implement this practice again from June 1, 2008 to August 31, 2008 to meet the annual shortfall of electricity.
The government later extended the schedule to October 31, which also included the holy month of Ramadan, which began in early September. This practice helped the government save around 250 MW of electricity per day, official sources in the Ministry of Water and Power said.

Windows 7 Free Upgrade

Latest News Updated, Windows 7 Free Upgrade: Windows 7 launches today and Microsoft hopes it will be a positive upgrade from the now outdated XP. If you bought a Windows Vista-based PC in the last four months, it’s likely that you’re eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7. Getting the free upgrade to Windows 7 might involve some work, and for some, the Windows 7 upgrade won’t be totally free.
Microsoft’s Windows 7 October 22 launch has many new features including Snap, the ability to instantly arrange two windows exactly side-by-side. It also features Live Taskbar Previews that allows you to scan through open files to find what you are looking for. Home networking is supposedly much easier to set up so that you can share music and other files.
Those who bought a Windows Vista-based PC in the last four months may be entitled to the Windows 7 upgrade for free. However, getting the upgrade could take a while so don’t count on getting it on launch day, October 22. Toshiba states that it will be getting upgrades out in October if they have registered and submitted the proper information.
Hewlett-Packard and Dell state that they will begin shipping the Windows 7 upgrade after October 22, though Lenovo says upgrades will ship one to two weeks from your request. Acer says “shipments will begin in increments. All orders will be handled on a first-in, first-out basis.” So if you bought a computer last week, you could be at the end of a long line.
Aside from actually getting the free upgrade of Windows 7, consumers may have other issues with the new upgrade. Problems are to be expected and if you’ve survived the horror of using Windows Vista, it shouldn’t be terribly painful.
Some of the issues anticipated with the upgrade of Windows 7:
Softpedia reported that Windows 7 upgrades could kill the recovery applications that manufacturers include with their computers.
Microsoft said that some “in-place” upgrades from Windows Vista to the new Windows 7 may take some users more than 20 hours to complete.
You will need a DVD drive to install the Windows 7 upgrade. If you skipped the DVD when you purchased a computer, then you’ll need to use an external one to add Windows 7.
You will need Internet Explorer to get the free upgrade. If you nixed it because you never use it…oops! You need it. IE is required to visit HP’s Windows 7 upgrade order page. That’s because the high and mighty Microsoft uses a Web program to validate your computer, and it only works in IE.
Did you keep your receipt when you bought your new computer? You’re going to need it or you’re not going to get your free Windows 7 upgrade. Start digging for it because without it, you’re paying full price for the upgrade. HP and Toshiba explicitly state that a proof of purchase, not just a serial code.
Free might not mean free for some when it comes to the Windows 7 upgrade. Some companies are charging hipping and handling charges as well as tax.. Lenovo charges $17.03 for U.S. customers, while Compaq, HP, Sony, and Toshiba charge some users and not others. No rhyme or reason to it. Bottom line — read the fine print.
The Windows 7 upgrade is a hot topic today and may continue to be due to the typical issues that are presented when anything using the word “upgrade” is combined with the word “computer”. Microsoft’s last operating system, Windows Vista, was a disaster when it was released in 2007. It was full of bugs, software incompatibilities and annoying security alerts. Hopefully the Windows 7 upgrade will be a little easier, although it seems that it’s already painfully complicated just to get a free upgrade.

Meteor Shower October 2009
Meteor Shower October 2009: The discovery of the Orionid meteor shower should be credited to E. C. Herrick (Connecticut, USA). In 1839, he made the ambiguous statement that activity seemed to be present during October 8 to 15. A similar statement was made in 1840, when he commented that the “precise date of the greatest meteoric frequency in October is still less definitely known, but it will in all probability be found to occur between the 8th and 25th of the month.”

The first precise observation of this shower was made by A. S. Herschel on 1864 October 18, when fourteen meteors were found to radiate from the constellation of Orion. Herschel confirmed that a shower originated from Orion on 1865 October 20. Thereafter, interest in this stream increased very rapidly—with the Orionids becoming one of best observed annual showers.
The Orionids were frequently observed during the latter years of the 19th century and became the focus of debate during the first quarter of the 20th century. The British amateur astronomer W. F. Denning and the American astronomer C. P. Olivier began using the pages of two astronomical periodicals to debate whether the Orionid radiant, the point from which the meteors seemed to radiate in the sky, moved from one day to the next: Denning argued that it did not, while Olivier argued that it did. Each astronomer had supporters that chimed in, but the argument remained essentially theirs. The problem was that the Orionid radiant was more diffuse than the other well-observed annual meteor showers. Thanks to the use of photography and the very precise plotting of meteors by several amateur and professional astronomers, Oliver was eventually proven correct.
One very unusual feature the Orionids tend to display is an unpredictable maximum. In 1981, observers reported very low rates of less than 10 meteors per hour during the period of October 18 to 21 (maximum predicted for October 21), but high rates of near 20 per hour were noted on the morning of October 23. Interestingly, a study published in Czechoslovakia during 1982, revealed the Orionids generally exhibited a double maximum. The finding was based on observations made during the period spanning 1944 to 1950. Shortly thereafter, several visual studies indicated the presence of a “plateau effect” or a long period of maximum devoid of any sharp decline of activity, instead of a double peak. Most notably, the 1984 observations of the Western Australia Meteor Section, show a nearly flat maximum lasting from October 21 to 24, while N. W. McLeod, III (Florida, USA), has frequently noted it to stretch up to 6 days.
The variation in activity levels around the time of maximum has been attributed to the presence of filaments within the Orionid stream orbit. Each of these filaments represents a previous orbit that comet Halley has followed in the past. Since observations indicate that comet Halley has been around for over 2200 years and since the comet orbits the sun in about 76 years, there are quite a few filaments making up the Orionid stream.

Sorority Wars

Sorority Wars: Lifetime’s new original movie, SORORITY WARS, premieres tonight, October 17, at 9pm, with encore presentations October 18 and 19 at 9 PM ET/PT.
I got a chance to take an early look at it and found it quite fun and entertaining. The movie follows Katie (Lucy Hale) as she begins her freshman year of college and gets into the whole sorority scene. Her mother (Courtney Thorne-Smith), who used to be part of the Delta house, expects her daughter to continue her legacy, but Katie is not sure Delta is really the right house for her.
Obviously, this movie doesn’t have any deep meaning and is also full of cliches, but I had a good time watching it. So if it sounds like you’re type of movie, give it a shot.
You can watch a preview for Sorority Row and check out more photos below.
