Bruni First Lady of France to Act for Woody Allen

PARIS, News Update: France’s first lady, singing ex-supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, has agreed to star in US auteur Woody Allen’s next movie, she told a television interviewer.
“He suggested I appear in his next film. I don’t know what the role would be, but I said yes,” the 41-year-old Italian-born singer-songwriter told the main evening entertainment show on the Canal+ network.

“I go into everything blindly, or I’d never do anything at all,” she added, apparently referring to her showbiz career rather than to her sudden marriage last year to President Nicolas Sarkozy.

“I’m not an actress at all. Perhaps I’ll be completely hopeless but I can’t miss an opportunity like this one. When I’m a grandmother I’d like to be able to say I made a film with Woody Allen,” she gushed.

“Woody Allen kindly asked me not to do a film with anyone else before him. If anything concrete ever comes of it, it’ll be a great experience for me.”

New York filmmaker Allen visited the French first couple in June this year during a trip to Paris to promote his last movie “Whatever Works”.

Asked whom he would like to cast in his next film, he said: “Without question, Carla Bruni! I’m sure she would be wonderful. She has charisma, and she performs, so she’s not a stranger to an audience.”

Of course it looked as if time was going to run out, garments were going to go unfinished and each woman was going to float away on a river of tears (mixed with other fluids, in the virus-stricken Carol Hannah’s case).

But, wouldn’t you know, all three ladies, competing in the second all-girl finale in a row, showed classy, polished and, for the most part, extremely wearable collections at the couture extravaganza in NYC.

And for the spoiler-avoiders among us, it seemed like anyone’s game.

But the judges ultimately decided that Irena, despite her aversion to color in her sporty-glam line, had played the game best.

“I can’t believe it!” the newest Project Runway winner exclaimed, jumping into Tim Gunn’s arms as he walked out to congratulate her.

“I’m definitely proud of myself,” she said. “I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I did have some stiff competition.”

That she did.
Althea, who finished in second place, sent a slew of jackets, pants and slim-silhouetted sportswear, including a fab white suit, down the runway. Most of the looks offered an interesting tuck here, an unexpected pleat there, but were overall pretty familiar. Which is great for your average shopper, but perhaps not so great if you’re supposed to be designing the look of the future.

And ultimately, the mix-and-match nature of her looks was what did her in up against Irena’s more cogent story.

Carol Hannah, as usual, created a few glamtastic gowns and an array of  covetable evening clothes. Heidi singled out a stunning, deep-blue Grecian confection that was actually the South Carolina native’s 13th (aka last-minute) look.

Once again, though, it was the lack of cohesion overall that sent Carol Hannah packing first tonight.

And Irena’s surprisingly edgy, nearly all-black collection looked like it will keep you warm, albeit poor, on cold winter nights. Extra points for those darling little polo-helmet-style hats. Very high fashion, indeed.

Really impressive all around, but there could only be one winner.

“Everything happens for a reason,” Althea lamented later. “Even though I didn’t win, I feel really great because I made a lot of good friends, met a lot of great people, got a  lot of great advice. So, you know, I’m feeling good…I may not have been the winner, but I’m still a winner.”

But Irena’s the one with the $100,000, a spread in Marie Claire and a Paris vacation on the horizon.

And congrats to her Models of the Runway counterpart Kalyn Hemphill, who wore Irena’s designs all the way to the top.

Latest news updated, Trans World Expedition: In November, I’ll be quitting my job and heading out on one of the last true adventures left on earth: Driving around the world.I’ll spend about a year on the road, starting and finishing in New York. When I can’t drive, I’ll ship the car by boat, then fly to the next stop to pick it up.
The route is sinuous. Cross Central America, then head down South America to Buenos Aires. From there, I’ll ship the car to South Africa, then drive north through Africa to Europe. I’m a native of France, so I’ll stop in Paris to get some paperwork done, then go east through Eastern Europe, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, and India. I’ll ship the car to Thailand, drive to Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia, and put the car on a final sailing home to the U.S.

My blog about the trip, where I’ll post updates from the road, is called “Trans World Expedition: The year of living dangerously.” I hope it will be a good tool for people who want to do a similar trip.

It is scary to leave your girlfriend, your career, your apartment and people you know to have a year of waking up in unfamiliar places. Many people think I’m insane to quit my job when the economy is so bad. But I’m 33 and I’ve worked since age 18. I came to New York as an artist and ended up as an art director. It’s early enough in my life that I can take a year off, then come back, hopefully pick up my career and start a family.

I believe a trip like this is something many people dream of. When you’re young and a student, you don’t have money to travel, but when you’re working and can afford it, you don’t have time. I always thought I would buy a place in New York, but when you think about it, is there a better investment than traveling around the world? Wouldn’t you be smarter after doing that? Wouldn’t you have incredible stories to tell your kids and grandkids?

THE ROUTE: My path will change depending on places I discover, tips, climate, where I can catch a boat, driving conditions, and visas. Staying out of trouble will also determine my route and how long I stay in one place.

Driving around the world may be more difficult now than it was in the 1960s, even though cars are more reliable and roads are better. Wars and civil unrest have eased in Latin America, but the crossing the Middle East is now a challenge. Here are some problems I’ll face:
