Project Runway Winner

latest news about, Project Runway Winner: Nine months after they marched their 13-look collections down the runway at Fall Fashion Week, Althea Harper, Irena Shabayeva and Carol Hannah Whitfield stood quaking before Heidi Klum & Co., waiting to hear who would be named the winner of Project Runway’s much-delayed sixth season.
Of course it looked as if time was going to run out, garments were going to go unfinished and each woman was going to float away on a river of tears (mixed with other fluids, in the virus-stricken Carol Hannah’s case).
But, wouldn’t you know, all three ladies, competing in the second all-girl finale in a row, showed classy, polished and, for the most part, extremely wearable collections at the couture extravaganza in NYC.
And for the spoiler-avoiders among us, it seemed like anyone’s game.
But the judges ultimately decided that Irena, despite her aversion to color in her sporty-glam line, had played the game best.
“I can’t believe it!” the newest Project Runway winner exclaimed, jumping into Tim Gunn’s arms as he walked out to congratulate her.
“I’m definitely proud of myself,” she said. “I think this deserves a pat on the back, because I did have some stiff competition.”
That she did.
Althea, who finished in second place, sent a slew of jackets, pants and slim-silhouetted sportswear, including a fab white suit, down the runway. Most of the looks offered an interesting tuck here, an unexpected pleat there, but were overall pretty familiar. Which is great for your average shopper, but perhaps not so great if you’re supposed to be designing the look of the future.
And ultimately, the mix-and-match nature of her looks was what did her in up against Irena’s more cogent story.
Carol Hannah, as usual, created a few glamtastic gowns and an array of covetable evening clothes. Heidi singled out a stunning, deep-blue Grecian confection that was actually the South Carolina native’s 13th (aka last-minute) look.
Once again, though, it was the lack of cohesion overall that sent Carol Hannah packing first tonight.
And Irena’s surprisingly edgy, nearly all-black collection looked like it will keep you warm, albeit poor, on cold winter nights. Extra points for those darling little polo-helmet-style hats. Very high fashion, indeed.
Really impressive all around, but there could only be one winner.
“Everything happens for a reason,” Althea lamented later. “Even though I didn’t win, I feel really great because I made a lot of good friends, met a lot of great people, got a lot of great advice. So, you know, I’m feeling good…I may not have been the winner, but I’m still a winner.”
But Irena’s the one with the $100,000, a spread in Marie Claire and a Paris vacation on the horizon.
And congrats to her Models of the Runway counterpart Kalyn Hemphill, who wore Irena’s designs all the way to the top.

Hours after House Democrats narrowly advanced legislation to reshape the country’s health care system, Republicans and a key independent in the Senate on Sunday vowed to kill the measure unless it is radically altered. “The House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “It was a bill written by liberals, for liberals.” Mr. Graham said that Senate moderates such as Joe Lieberman “are not going to get anywhere near the House bill.” Mr. Lieberman, Connecticut independent, said that if the Senate version incl

Auburn Vs Kentucky

Auburn Vs Kentucky: I would be remiss if I didn’t note, at this point, that I’m a perfect 6-0 picking Auburn this year, so I would advise you to rush to Vegas as soon as I make my pick below.

Just kidding. I have no idea what my record is against the spread, but I imagine it is not as good.
In any case, I think this is a dangerous game for Auburn. Kentucky has been very pesky, including last week against a good South Carolina team. But I think Auburn’s offense can rebound from a shaky week to outscore Kentucky. (The Tigers could have outscored Arkansas even after a dreadful first half had it not been for a couple of key mistakes in the second).

Ashford And Simpson
October 10, 2009 by lee
Nickolas Ashford (born May 4, 1942, in Fairfield, South Carolina) and Valerie Simpson (born August 26, 1946 in The Bronx, New York) are a successful husband and wife songwriting/production team and recording artists. They met at Harlem’s White Rock Baptist Church in 1964.

After having recorded unsuccessfully as a duo, they joined aspiring solo artist and former member of the Ikettes, Josie Jo Armstead, at the Scepter/Wand label where their compositions were recorded by Ronnie Milsap (“Never Had It So Good”), Maxine Brown (“One Step At A Time”), as well as the Shirelles and Chuck Jackson. Another of the trio’s songs “Let’s Go Get Stoned” gave Ray Charles a number one U.S. R&B hit in 1966. That same year Ashford & Simpson joined Motown where their best-known songs included “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “You’re All I Need To Get By”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, and “Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)”. As performers, Ashford and Simpson’s best-known song is “Solid” (1984 US and 1985 UK).
The duo essentially had two careers: one as a successful writing and producing team and the other as singers and performers themselves. They started their career in the mid-1960s, writing for artists such as The 5th Dimension (“California Soul”), Aretha Franklin (“Cry Like A Baby”), and Ray Charles (“Let’s Go Get Stoned” and “‘I Don’t Need No Doctor”). Their work with Charles brought them to the attention of Motown chief Berry Gordy.
Joining the Motown staff in 1966, Ashford & Simpson were paired with the vocal duo of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and they wrote and/or produced all but one of the late-1960s Gaye/Terrell singles, including hits such as the original version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “Your Precious Love”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, and “You’re All I Need to Get By”. According to Gaye in the book “Divided Soul,” Simpson did most of the vocals on the last album he did with Terrell, “Easy,” as a way of Terrell’s family to have additional income as she was battling an ultimately fatal brain tumor. (Simpson is quoted as denying this in a book written by Terrell’s sister Ludie Montgomery.)
Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced almost all the songs on three 1970′s albums for former Supreme Diana Ross including her first solo album Diana Ross (“Reach Out and Touch (Somebody’s Hand)” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”), Surrender (“Remember Me”), and The Boss.
Other Motown artists that Ashford & Simpson worked with included Gladys Knight & The Pips (Didn’t You Know You’d Have To Cry Sometime”, “The Landlord”, “Bourgie, Bourgie”, and “Taste Of Bitter Love”), Smokey Robinson & The Miracles (“Who’s Gonna Take The Blame”), The Marvelettes (“Destination:Anywhere”), The Supremes (“Some Things You Never Get Used To”), and The Dynamic Superiors (“Shoe, Shoe Shine”).
Other artists with whom Ashford & Simpson had hits were Teddy Pendergrass (“Is It Still Good To You”), The Brothers Johnson (“Ride-O-Rocket”), Chaka Khan, both on her own (“I’m Every Woman” and “Clouds,” ) and with Rufus (“Keep It Comin’” and “Ain’t Nothin’ But a Maybe” )
Ashford & Simpson’s career as recording artists actually began in 1964, when they recorded “I’ll Find You” as “Valerie & Nick.” This was followed by several obscure singles Ashford recorded on the Glover, Verve and ABC labels such as “It Ain’t Like That”, (later recorded by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas), “California Soul” and “Dead End Kids” backed by his own version of “Let’s Go Get Stoned”. After concentrating on working with other artists, Simpson was the featured soloist on the songs “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “What’s Going On” on the Quincy Jones albums Gula Matari in 1970 and its follow-up, Smackwater Jack. Simpson subsequently recorded two solo LPs for Motown: Valerie Simpson Exposed in 1971, and, the following year, the album Valerie Simpson, which included the single “Silly Wasn’t I,” which was sampled on 50 Cent’s “Best Friend” from the movie Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The song was also sampled by 9th Wonder on Murs’s “Silly Girl” in the album Murray’s Revenge. Ashford & Simpson were featured singing selections from Simpson’s solo albums on the PBS TV show Soul!, hosted by Ellis Haizlip in 1971. They left Motown in 1973, after the albums Simpson recorded for the label received poor promotion and the company refused to release an album of the two of them recording a collection of their most famous songs for other artists.
In 1974 Ashford & Simpson got married, and they resumed their career as a duo with the Warner Bros. album Gimme Something Real. This was followed by the hit singles, “Don’t Cost You Nothin’,” in 1977, “It Seems To Hang On” in 1978, “Is It Still Good To Ya” in 1978, “Found A Cure” in 1979, “Street Corner” in 1982, and their biggest hit, “Solid”, which they recorded in 1984.
In 1978, they were featured as vocalists, along with Chaka Khan, on the hit single “Stuff Like That” from Quincy Jones’ Sounds…And Stuff Like That album and contributed to the writing of the soundtrack to The Wiz.
Simpson appeared (with Melba Moorman) as part of the “Blood, Sweat & Tears Soul Chorus” on the band’s Al Kooper led debut, Child Is Father to the Man.
On his own, Ashford produced, along with Frank Wilson, the mammoth hit “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”, which was recorded by Diana Ross & the Supremes in collaboration with the Temptations in 1968. He also appeared in the movie New Jack City (1991), as Reverend Oates, an ordained minister who was part of Nino Brown’s entourage.
Simpson’s brothers were in the record business as well: Ray Simpson replaced Victor Willis in the Village People and their brother Jimmy Simpson, produced the group G.Q., (who had big hits with “Disco Nights” and “I Do Love You”), and was in great demand as a mixing engineer during the disco era.

John Phillips Mamas and Papas

John Phillips Mamas and Papas, actress and singer Mackenzie Phillips, has just revealed the shocking family secret that she had kept hidden for 31 years. And it turns out, that the secret she had been hiding was that she’d slept with her father.
This has obviously come as a shock to many, as Mackenzie’s father was John Phillips, better known as Papa John from the 1960’s band, The Mamas & The Papas. John Phillips is the father to Jeffrey, Mackenzie, Chynna, Tamerlane and Bijou.
John Phillips was born in South Carolina, to a retired United States Marine Corps officer and a Cherokee Indian, who his father apparently met in Oklahoma. In his autobiography, John Phillips described his father as a heavy drinker.
Phillips had been married four times, with his first wife being Susan Adams, who is the mother of Jeffrey and Mackenzie Phillips. His second wife was Michelle Gilliam, who was also a member of the group The Mamas & The Papas.
The Mamas & The Papas were formed in the 1960’s and included the members Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty, as well as John Phillips, who was the primary songwriter for the group. They went on to have several top 10 hits.
They split up in 1968 and in1970, John Phillips released his first solo album. That is when John started using narcotics. In 1972, he married his third wife, Genevieve Waite. John then moved to London in 1973, where he worked with Mick Jagger.
Then in 1981, John was convicted of drug trafficking. Could this be where Mackenzie got her drug problems from? Mackenzie says that it started, with her father raping her when she was unconscious, but soon turned into a consensual relationship.
