Twins Separated from Bangladesh Intensive Care: Hospital

SYDNEY news update: Bangladeshi twins Trishna and Krishna have left intensive care as they continue their remarkable recovery from surgery to separate their conjoined heads, the hospital said.
Twins Separated from Bangladesh Intensive Care HospitalThe two-year-old girls, rescued from a Dhaka orphanage, moved to a shared room on the normal ward on Monday, just a week after the 32-hour operation to disconnect their fused skulls, brains and blood vessels.

“They are sharing a room together and settling into their new environment,” Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital said in a statement.

“The girls are getting to know the new staff who will be caring for them now that they have left intensive care.”

The twins’ heads remain heavily bandaged but they have appeared otherwise well, with Trishna awake and talking two days after surgery and Krishna blowing a signature raspberry when she was woken from a medical coma on Saturday.

Their condition has amazed medical staff who nursed them back to fitness after they arrived in fading health from Bangladesh two years ago, and gave them just a 25 percent chance of both recovering completely from the separation.

“We’re all so proud of our children’s hospital and we’re so proud of the quality of the nurses and the staff and the doctors that we’ve got there,” Victoria state Premier John Brumby told Fairfax radio.

“This was just another great example where these two children, who I think, to be honest, many of us thought were not going to get through, have come through, fingers crossed at this stage, with flying colours.”

The girls’ 22-year-old mother, who was unable to care for the sickly babies and handed them to an orphanage soon after their birth, has said she hopes to travel to Australia to see them.

Umpire Phil Cuzzi

I sat at a local pub this Friday night taking in Game Two of the ALDS of the Minnesota Twins and New York Yankees. I thought it would be an interesting game to be sure. If Minnesota would win this game, they would split the series with Games Three and Four at the Metrodome. With two wins at home, they could win the series without ever returning to New York. However, this did not happen.
Umpire Phil CuzziIn a game that proved to be a game of broken oppurtunities for the Twins, it appeared that even late inning blown calls were fitting to a game not going their way.

Starters Blackburn and Burnett pitched near perfection keeping their opponents hitless and guessing.

In the 4th inning, Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez overran second base on a single with two outs and got caught before teammate Delmon Young stepped on home plate.

Throw in countless questionable pitch calls and many knew this game was going to be a close one. After Minnesota scored in the eighth inning to lead the game 3-1 heading into the 9th.

Upon entering the bottom of then 9th, Mark Teixeira hit a lead off single followed by a clutch home run by Alex Rodriguez off of Twins closer Joe Nathan blowing a save oppurtunity.

Upon escaping the inning, the Twins would try and settle it in extras. After escaping a near miss the bottom of the 10th, the Twins would open the top of the 11th with AL Batting Champ, Joe Mauer. He opened up on a hit down the left-field line. Left-field umpire Phil Cuzzi called the hit foul despite being clearly fair by about a foot AND hitting New York left fielder Melky Cabrera’s glove.Umpire Phil Cuzzi

This play infuriated me not only as a Twins fan, but as a fan of baseball all-around. Especially after the following hitters Jason Kubel and Michael Cuddyer followed up with singles to fill the bases. I did feel a bit of justice as a Twins fan after seeing Mauer single up the middle later in the at-bat, but afterwards, a big sign pointed to this replay and pointed to a bigger problem that just can’t be overlooked…

That even an umpire not even 15-feet away staring right at the play can miss an obvious call.

With that said, here’s what I wonder Bud Selig will try to ‘ignore’ in order to not instate replay on fair/foul balls…

* This was a playoff game. High stakes are a part of it and makes the games worth more. This means essentially that the blown call(s) would be an even bigger cost to who truly is the better team.
* This was an extra-inning game. The later the game, the more tedious the calling should be. This big of a blown call seems only bigger when the game pivots on every play.
* This was a pivotal game. By a Twins victory, the advantage goes to Minnesota with the next two games being played in Minnesota. If Minnesota wins those two, the Twins could be preparing for the ALCS rather then staving off elimination.
* This was the only game on. Kind of harsh when every baseball fanatic witnessed this.
* This was a nationally televised game. So not only is every fan watching baseball watching this game, but everyone in the country.
* Left-field umpire Phil Cuzzi was starring right at the play.
* Cuzzi was 15-feet away.
* He missed the fact that it hit Melky Cabrera’s glove… in fair territory… and still bounced… in fair territory.
* And the big one… he had no obstruction.

Let’s be serious. You can NOT miss this call in the 11th inning of a playoff game in a pivotal game that could ultimatly decide these team’s fates.

At no other time has replay made more sense in a modern day scene. In the playoffs, no team should have to suffer a loss, especially when two hits follow a supposed double. At worst, the Twins would have been up one run heading into the bottom of the 11th. With that said, the game would have continued at a 4-4 tie.

Food For Thought:

In my opinion, the Yankees have never looked any weaker.

First they pay more then the Twins payroll in pickups last offseason to upgrade their roster, then they make the ballpark so shallow the Twins could become the bombers, then umps hand them games… what’s next?

Mark Teixeira

Mark Teixeira lasered a  2-and-1 pitch by Jose Mijares on a line off the top of the leftfield wall and into the seats for a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th inning Friday night, sending the crowd into hysterics.
Mark Teixeira
It gave the Yankees a wild 4-3 victory over the Twins and a 2-0 lead in their American League Division Series, but that was only the second loudest the Yankee Stadium crowd of 50,006 had been all night.

The first was in the bottom of the ninth with the Yankees trailing 3-1. Alex Rodriguez, whose two-out RBI single had tied the score in the sixth, crushed Joe Nathan’s 3-and-1 pitch into the centerfield side of the Yankees’ bullpen for a game-tying two-run homer.

Teixeira had led off the ninth with a single. Two innings later, he and Rodriguez became co-heroes.

“I got chills right now. Best place to play in the world! These fans are the greatest!” Teixeira said moments after Game 2 starter A.J. Burnett applied a whipped-cream pie to his face. It was the Yankees’ fourth walk-off victory over the Twins this season and ninth win in nine games.

The Twins left 17 runners on base to the Yankees’ five. That the Yankees were in position to break a tie in the bottom of the 11th was a story in itself.

After the Yankees put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the 10th but couldn’t score – Johnny Damon lined into a double play – Damaso Marte started the top of the 11th by allowing consecutive singles to Joe Mauer and Jason Kubel.

Earlier in his at-bat, Mauer actually had lined a drive down the leftfield line that hit Melky Cabrera’s glove in fair territory, landed fair, bounced into the stands and incorrectly was ruled a foul ball by umpire Phil Cuzzi.

Said crew chief Tim Tschida, “After looking at it, clearly an incorrect decision was made. When you render a decision that possibly affects the outcome of the game, nobody feels it worse than the umpires.”

David Robertson came in for Marte and gave up a single to Michael Cuddyer to load the bases. With the infield pulled in, Delmon Young lined out to Teixeira and Carlos Gomez followed with a grounder that Teixeira threw home for a force for the second out. Robertson escaped the inning by inducing a flyout to center from Brendan Harris.

Then Teixeira lined Mijares’ fourth pitch of the bottom of the 11th for the winning homer.

Rodriguez, who is 4-for-8 with five RBIs in the first two games of this series, faced the questions last Sunday about his dreadful postseasons past. He felt this October would be different, his tone almost suggesting “just wait and see.”

“I also know I’m hitting cleanup for a reason and it’s going to be important for me to come up with some big hits when my number’s called,” Rodriguez said then. “And I’m looking forward to that opportunity.”

Apparently.

The Yankees, who memorably had three straight walk-off victories over the Twins during a four-game sweep in mid-May, now take their 2-0 Series lead to the Metrodome. In Game 3 Sunday, Andy Pettitte will take on the scourge of Yankees fans everywhere, Carl Pavano

The Yankees’ bullpen, a great strength much of the season, hurt them Friday. Phil Hughes was charged with two runs in the eighth as the Twins took a 3-1 lead.

Hughes retired the first two Twins in the eighth and got ahead 1-and-2 before throwing three straight balls to Gomez, who rarely walks. Harris’ single put runners on first and third, and Nick Punto, who hit .228 this season, slapped a 2-and-2 curveball to center for an RBI single. Girardi brought in Mariano Rivera to face Denard Span, who singled up the middle to make it 3-1.

Burnett, making his postseason debut after two days of intense discussion about him getting to throw to his favorite catcher, Jose Molina, pitched well, allowing one run and three hits in six innings. He alternated between having command issues and being in command, walking five, hitting two and striking out six.

The Yankees, who went hitless against Twins starter Nick Blackburn in the first 42/3 innings, fell behind 1-0 in the sixth but tied it in the bottom half of the inning on Rodriguez’s two-out RBI single, the third straight time in this series that he came through in that situation.
